Details
Annual and quarterly data for breastfeeding prevalence at 6 to 8 weeks. Information is presented at local authority of residence, region and England level.
The data was collected through an interim reporting system, Children’s public health 0 to 5 years: national reporting, set up to collect health visiting activity data at a local authority resident level. Data is submitted by local authorities on a voluntary basis.
The Community Services Data Set (CSDS) will be used as the basis for these metrics in the longer term, once the data quality has reached a suitable quality.
Local authority commissioners and health professionals can use these resources to track how many infants in their local area are breastfed.
Correction notice: December 2025
Since publication in November 2025, an error has been identified in the number of infants due a 6 to 8 week review in quarters 1 and 2 of the financial year 2024 to 2025 in Croydon.
This affects the percentage of infants whose breastfeeding status is known for Croydon, London and England, in quarters 1 and 2 and the financial year 2024 to 2025 - and the corresponding confidence intervals. The changes are:
- for Croydon the percentage of infants whose breastfeeding status is known from:
- 80.9% to 78.4% for quarter 1
- 87.0% to 80.5% for quarter 2
- 85.4% to 83.1% annually
- for London, the percentage of infants whose breastfeeding status is known from:
- 78.7% to 78.6% for quarter 1
- 81.3% to 81.0% for quarter 2
- 83.9% to 83.8% annually
- for England, the percentage of infants whose breastfeeding status is known from 90.7% to 90.6% for quarter 2
It also changes the percentage of infants totally breastfed for England for quarter 2 from 33.6% to 33.5%.
The data has been updated and reissued in the annual data tables on this page and in the Fingertips tool. These data tables supersede any previous published files.
Correction notice: June 2026
Birmingham Council has identified a data quality issue with their breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks data for 2024 to 2025. The data has therefore been removed from the breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks indicator in Fingertips and we do not plan to issue a replacement figure. No changes have been made to the data tables or commentary on this GOV.UK page. No other changes have been made to Fingertips.
