A man has died in a maximum security prison after driving his ute into a Western NSW police station. Donny Hobbs was denied bail after the incident at Mudgee Police Station last Friday, where police say he narrowly missed officers and a civilian. What's next? Corrective Services and NSW Police are investigating the death. A man has died in a maximum security prison days after driving his car at police officers before crashing into a police station in Western New South Wales. Donny Hobbs was denied bail on Friday after he was charged with multiple offences, including dangerous driving and damaging property in the crash at Mudgee police station. The ABC understands the 67-year-old was then taken into custody at Bathurst Correction Facility as a remand inmate staying in the maximum security part of the prison. Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) confirmed Donny Hobbs died in the prison on Wednesday, June 3. CSNSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident. "Any death in custody is immediately reported to the NSW coroner and subject to a compulsory, rigorous public inquiry," a CSNSW spokesperson said. 'Unacceptable risk' Police said that around 1:30 on Friday afternoon, Mr Hobbs drove his car at officers who were patrolling near the police station. A short time later, he then drove at another officer as he was leaving the station before crashing into the building. Commander of Orana Mid-Western Police District Superintendent Tim Chinn said the ute "narrowly missed" several police officers and a civilian. During a court appearance on Friday, Acting Judge Howard Bell refused bail, claiming Mr Hobbs posed an "unacceptable risk". The court heard that Mr Hobbs planned the incident, and he held animosity towards police. Mudgee Police Station remains temporarily closed, with a customer service bus operating from the front and services supplemented by a nearby station. Structural assessments were underway to assess what repairs would be needed. ABC Western Plains — local news in your inbox Get our local newsletter, delivered free each Friday
