Anyway, it's the visitors who kick off, despite neither side appearing too keen to do so initially. Mexico from right to left, the Matildas on the defensive early. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 7:08pm Kick off time... Anthems sung, with real gusto on behalf of the sizable Mexican contingent in the stands tonight it must be said, it's time to kick this game off. This woman says what we all need to say better than I can, I reckon. You heard (read) her. Let's go. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 7:04pm Wholesome tunnel talk We all hear a lot about how the Matildas are the country's favourite team, and seeing the interactions in the tunnel between the players and the mascots is incredibly affirming in that regard. The Tillies are all talking to their young shadows, asking questions, answering questions. It's a joy to see, it really is. Anyway, they're being held there for an indeterminably long time so perhaps conversation is inevitable. Here they come, a wall of sound and blitz of firecrackers greeting the two teams before the national anthems. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:59pm Tonight we're in Western Sydney Tonight's match is taking place at Western Sydney Stadium in Parramatta, on Darug country. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:57pm Your thoughts Hello Simon, Looking forward to tonight's match - Raso being Raso, Foord on target and Fowler conjuring up a bit of her magic. Oh, and there's Sam Kerr as a back-up as well... - Mike The Matildas will need to hit the ground running this time round against Mexico and capitalise on chances to convert them into meaningful shots at goal so we can find the back of the net and score a couple goals, and we can't afford to get complacent in the second half again after conceding late in stoppage time. - Adam Thanks for being with us tonight everyone, you are all most welcome. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:55pm Big game for Alana Kennedy? I don't know about you, but I was not particularly impressed with Alana Kennedy's performance on Saturday night. She had a good Asian Cup but I am not sold on her playing in midfield. It's a big question for the Matildas moving forward, because I don't know if she is the right fit. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:53pm Foord's 150th - with AAP Caitlin Foord is the player celebrating a milestone tonight, playing her 150th match for the Matildas. She will be the sixth Australian to do so and joining present squad members Emily van Egmond and Alanna Kennedy. Clare Polkinghorne, Cheryl Salisbury and Lisa De Vanna are the other three to do so. "I remember at the time, I think it was Heather Garriock was playing 100 [matches]… I remember thinking, 'wow, that would be so cool to be able to do that'," Foord told the Sydney Morning Herald this week. "And she got presented with her little plaque at that game. I remember having that moment and thinking like 'that's what I want to do'. So to be sitting here now, so far on, it's special to think that I have gone on and done that as well." Foord, now 31, scored on debut as a 16-year-old against New Zealand in 2011, a match in which she played at right back. What are the odds that she is going to score again tonight in her normal position of left wing? "It's always special to score in the green and gold, but I've always said I don't care who scores as long as we get it in the back of the net and win and that will be the same for tomorrow as well," she said. She has scored 40 goals in her 149 appearances so far. Despite the personal accolades, Foord admits the bigger picture remains the focus after their gutting loss in the Asian Cup final to Japan in March. "It's always stayed the same; we want to do something special, win something," she said. "We've come close a few times and that goal's still there." Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:50pm 'It's good to keep the ball, but we want to create and score goals': Foord - AAP Matildas coach Joe Montemurro admits Mexico's strategic curveball has left them with plenty of homework ahead of their Sydney rematch. The visitors won 1-0 thanks to an injury-time goal in Newcastle on Saturday, despite Australia having 19 shots on goal. Ahead of her 150th national appearance in Sydney on Tuesday, Caitlin Foord admitted there was a need for polish ahead of next year's World Cup in Brazil. "As a front-line, when we dominate as much as we did in the game with possession, you want end product," she said. "It's about finding those passes and getting those shots off. "It did feel good those first 15 minutes [controlling possession] … the stats showed that. "It's good to keep the ball, but we want to create and score goals." But the coach has focused more on their ability to cope with a high-pressing Mexican opponent that threw the Matildas off their game. "They went more direct and long and we struggled to go with it," he said. "I put it all in context because this is what these games are all about. Different styles, different ideas. "In my whole career I've only seen two teams that lift their fullbacks so high … I haven't seen a team do that for a long, long time. "We had to study it, analyse it and not get emotional about it." Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:49pm How can I watch the match? its not on channel ten, so we cant watch it - garry The match isn’t on free to air (Ch10) - subscription Paramount+ only. A poor effort by Football Australia… - TeeJay Is there live coverage on ABC Radio tonight; please provide details. - Pk The Matildas game tonight is not on Channel 10, contrary to what I thought earlier. So the only way you can watch the game is on Paramount+. Before you all start yelling at me, this is not my decision, you'll have to talk to Channel 10 about that. As for radio coverage, that's not my area either, but I can tell you the match is not on ABC radio. Good news though, you can stay here with me! Key Event Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:46pm Three changes for Mexico Mexico have made three changes for tonight's match, mostly in the attacking third of the pitch. Goal-scorer from Saturday night Diana Ordóñez comes into the side, as does fellow striker Jasmine Casarez. Kiana Palacios and María Sánchez drop to the bench. The other change for the Mexicans is in midfield, where Karla Nieto starts in place of Nancy Antonio. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:42pm Matildas need clarity, and to remove 'wrong' decisions in final third - with AAP Joe Montemurro was pretty honest about his side's shortcomings in Newcastle in the post-match press conference. He had noted on Channel 10's coverage that there was a reason Mexico had been selected as opponents for this window - and it wasn't for them to be a pushover for the fans to enjoy. He was also pretty positive as well, saying that the opening 15 minutes or so were "some of the best football we've played in a long, long time," — and it's hard to argue with that. However, in that passage of play (and up until early in the second half) the Matildas simply didn't challenge the goalkeeper. "The attacking third — I've said it many, many times — it's so difficult to work, to coach because it's feeling, it's the moment," the former Arsenal boss said in his post-match press conference. "There are many, many things that happen in those areas and the decisions were wrong. It's as simple as that." Montemurro said that changing the way the Matildas have been playing is going to take time but the template was being imposed. "You saw how high the line was. You saw how high Steph was and Wini was. We're trying to actually really dominate games a lot higher," he said. "It's not in our DNA. We have to still progress and learn that. "We regained the ball a lot when we lost it, but sometimes the right decision wasn't made. That's probably where we got caught today." Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:37pm Matildas missed the final pass too often At least some of the criticism for the Matildas has surrounded the lack of a final ball, a poor pass or lead-footed touch just when it mattered. Caitlin Foord noted that in per post-match interview with Channel 10 on Saturday night. "The final pass just wasn't there," she said. "That's something we need to be better at going into the next game, and just more shots as well." The Arsenal striker said that she felt the Matildas "dominated" most of the game and that is a fair reflection, even if the better chances fell to the Mexican visitors. However, she noted that the side are going to have to make a real "statement" here tonight. "We know how important these games are for our rankings," she tells Channel 10. "We're gunna have to make a statement in the next game. "I think we just need to tighten things up a little bit. "In the front third we just need to get some more shots and final pass needs to be better." Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:33pm Newcastle turned out Despite the disappointing display and subsequent defeat in Newcastle, the locals didn't seem to mind too much, with huge numbers staying behind to salute their heroes after the full time whistle. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:29pm Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool If you wanted to hear what the injury-time winner sounded like to the Mexican fans who woke up at a very, very early hour of their Saturday morning, look no further. Here's Diana Ordóñez's late goal, en Español. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:26pm Mexico end two-decade drought with Newcastle win It was a historic night for Mexico in Newcastle, when El Tri Femenil secured a first victory over Australia since 2004 with a 1-0 win. Diana Ordóñez's stoppage-time finish was the only goal of a game in which the Matildas looked disjointed and thoroughly frustrated as a result. Mexico had two brilliance chances to open the scoring before the final goal came, both of which they spurned, while the Matildas in all truth barely posed any threat in the final third whatsoever. Here's how that game played out. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:25pm Mexico are a tough opponent Will Mexico be a tough opponent? - Harry Look, they won on Saturday, so I guess you could say so. Indeed, this Mexican team is on a superb run at the moment that belies their ranking of 27th in the world (the Matildas are 15th). They are, in fact, unbeaten in their last 16 international matches. And yes, a lot of those games have been against absolute minnows like Saint Lucia (7-0), US Virgin Islands (9-0) and Puerto Rico (6-0). But they have also beaten Brazil in that run, as well as New Zealand (twice) and Colombia in 2025. So yeah, they are a tough opponent. Key Event Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:19pm Matildas team news Joe Montemurro has made just two changes from the team that lost on Saturday in Newcastle. Everton midfielder Clare Wheeler comes into the starting line up, as does Hayley Raso. Amy Sayer and Emily van Egmond both drop to the bench. It's likely that Mary Fowler will drop into the attacking midfield role behind a centrally-operating Sam Kerr, with Raso hitting the right wing as part of a trident of attackers with Caitlin Foord, who will captain the side in her 150th game, starts on the left. The Matildas are, regretfully, playing in their green change strip tonight, with Mexico in white. Key Event Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:12pm What time is kick off tonight? Tonight's match kicks off at 7:00pm AEST in Sydney. That's 7:00pm in Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria and Tasmania. It's 6:30pm in South Australia and the Northern Territory. And it's 5:00pm in WA, so make sure you Western Australians hurry home from the office, won't you. Tue 9 Jun 2026 at 6:02pm Good evening folks Hello football fans and welcome to the second game of this two-match series between the Matildas and Mexico. My name is Simon Smale and I am going to be your host for this evening as the Matildas look to bounce back against the Mexican team that beat them 1-0 in Newcastle on Saturday night. Saturday's defeat was no doubt disappointing, but perhaps more disappointing was the way the Matildas played, struggling to find the final ball in front of goal and making some really poor errors in midfield and defence. The 23,167 fans in the Hunter didn't seem to mind too much, but there has been a fair amount of criticism from some supporters online - a lot of whom are asking the same questions. For example, why did coach Joe Montermurro only make three changes in the game and not expose other players to top-flight football? Where did the midfield disappear to? What was with the lack of shooting when chances presented themselves? Answers for those critics may come over the next couple of hours at Western Sydney Stadium, so fingers crossed we see a Matildas team come out and make a statement of intent this time around.
