When a couple purchased a 19th-century church, they knew they'd have quite the renovation project on their hands.
Lauren Gunderman and her partner want to turn the historic building into a luxury wedding and events venue. However, the church dates back to 1872 and has plenty of quirks for the DIYers to address.
The New York couple, who now own The Stately on Main, a former Presbyterian church in Waterville, recently highlighted one of their dilemmas. They spotted a "mystery room" and have no idea what to do about it.
Lauren posted a video of the intriguing space tucked away in the ceiling. On Instagram, she asked: "How the hell do we get into this mystery room?"
Even after the pair removed the boards and tried to scope out the space with their phone cameras, they couldn't find the hidden room.
In the caption, Lauren added: "Another attempt at getting into the mystery room in my 1872 church! Why am I wearing pink slides with socks?
"In this video, we're trying to locate the ‘mystery room,’ which is wherever those two windows you see on the exterior actually exist inside the church.
"We figured going through the floor would get us there, but instead we just found… more floor."
Even though the couple haven't been able to get inside the church's quirky room, they think they've finally got to the bottom of the mystery.
Lauren revealed: "Spoiler: after receiving a flood of comments from organ experts, I've since learned the windows were likely boarded up inside the organ room after it was electrified but I don't want to mess with the pipes, so we may never know for sure!"
Even though this is a perfectly logical explanation, some people are still urging the couple to "run" from the project because the room seems a little creepy.
In the comments section, one Instagram user joked: "So you bought an old church with a boarded off room… and your first thought was how do we get in there? That’s where the demon sleeps."
Another admitted: "So, wait you bought and old church, found a closed off, completely closed off sealed off room or space and your first thought is how do I get in?? Nope nope nope… have it blessed and hope whatever they boarded up/sealed in there stays in there."
A third wrote: "Burn it down there’s obviously a ghost in there." And a fourth added: "Feels like the intro to a horror movie."
