British Army service member killed in training accident in northern Iraq A member of the British Army was killed in a training accident in northern Iraq on Sunday, the Ministry of Defence announced A member of the British Army has died in a training accident in northern Iraq. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the incident took place on Sunday (May 30) and that the service person's family have been informed. They have requested a period of grace before further details are released. "Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends at this time," the MoD added. It comes after Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney, 25, died on January 25 following an incident at Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland, one of the UK's largest army training ranges. The officer, who grew up in Co Roscommon, served as a fire support commander within 129 (Dragon) Battery of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery. He joined the British Army in January 2020 and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in December 2020 after attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. An inquest opening in March heard that "an incident occurred which resulted in Gilbert suffering a gunshot wound, which is believed to have entered through his back and exited through his left shoulder". The inquest was adjourned pending a service inquiry by Northumbria Police, the Health and Safety Executive and the Defence Safety Authority. Following his death, the MoD said Capt Muldowney was an "immensely enthusiastic officer who embraced life with a vigour that inspired those around him". This is a Breaking News story.
