Pitot-Aided Attitude and Air Velocity Estimation with Almost Global Asymptotic Stability Guarantees
Announce Type: replace Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of attitude and air velocity estimation for fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using IMU measurements and at least one Pitot tube measurement, with almost global asymptotic stability (AGAS) guarantees. A cascade observer architecture is developed, in which a Riccati/Kalman-type filter estimates the body-fixed frame air velocity and the vehicle's tilt using IMU data as inputs and Pitot measurements as outputs. Under...
Amplified Arctic iceberg traffic reshapes benthic biodiversity
Abstract The Arctic is undergoing rapid warming, resulting in retreating sea ice and glaciers1, yet how cryospheric changes propagate into the deep ocean remains poorly understood2. Here we identify a climate-driven mechanism linking accelerating glacier disintegration to an increase in deep-sea hard-bottom habitats far beyond calving fronts. Seafloor observations in Fram Strait show a localized increase in the density and patchiness of dropstones delivered by debris-laden icebergs.
The American Missile Crisis
Recent global conflicts, from Russia and Ukraine to Iran and Israel, have seen a resurgent awareness of the frailty of US munitions stock, which has been drawn down by both direct and indirect involvement in these events. While exact stockpile volumes are not disclosed, it is estimated that supplies of US warheads and the missiles that carry them have declined by nearly an order of magnitude since their peak during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Analysts have estimated that in the event of a...
An Opticalmechanics Framework for Dynamic Estimation of Multibody Systems
arXiv:2606.09383v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Conventional dynamics analysis of the human body is often constrained by the need for contact force and torque sensors and controlled laboratory environments. To address this issue, this study proposes an opticalmechanics kinematic-dynamic integrated estimation framework for multibody systems. Specifically, a constrained multibody model is established to describe the system dynamics, while image-measured kinematic quantities are used as non...
Sharp-interface Simulations of Energetic Multiphase Flows with Large Density and Viscosity Ratios
arXiv:2606.02467v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Flows with high density ratios, such as wave breaking and air entrainment in maritime applications, remain challenging to simulate due to their energetic and strongly nonlinear nature. In such regimes, maintaining numerical robustness is difficult when using the commonly adopted velocity-based formulation. The Consistent Mass-Momentum (CMOM) transport framework improves numerical robustness by enforcing fundamental physical properties, most...
On the spatial statistics of free-surface turbulence and the complementarity of 'dimples' and 'scars'
arXiv:2606.09205v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The air--water interface governs the exchange of heat and gas between natural water bodies and their surrounding environment. Turbulence beneath the free surface imprints characteristic features: near-circular depressions (`dimples') and elongated indentations (`scars'). Recent studies have shown that these are linked to sub-surface flow features in a temporal sense.
