CERN’s new chief on the gamble that could fix our picture of reality
When Mark Thomson was 13, he read a book about the European Organization for Nuclear Research, better known as CERN, a particle physics lab whose remit was to interrogate the fabric of reality. The book left him both fascinated by how the universe worked and frustrated by its lack of detail. More than 40 years later, Thomson is CERN’s director general, taking charge just as it shuts down the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for upgrades and decides where to place its next multibillion-pound bet.
Archi: Agentic Operations at the CMS Experiment
arXiv:2606.04755v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: We present Archi, an open-source, end-to-end framework for scientific collaborations that combines the systematic ingestion and organization of heterogeneous data sources with the deployment of configurable, private, and extensible agents that retrieve and reason over them. An instance of Archi has been deployed for the Computing Operations team of the CMS experiment at CERN's LHC since February 2026 as a support agent for technical...
Overview of the ALICE ITS3 Upgrade
Announce Type: new Abstract: The ALICE experiment will replace its three innermost tracking layers with the Inner Tracking System 3 (ITS3) during LHC Long Shutdown 3. This upgrade introduces the first fully cylindrical, wafer-scale silicon vertex detector, utilising Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) fabricated in a 65nm CMOS process. By thinning sensors to 50$\mu$m and bending them to radii as small as 19mm, the design achieves a self-supporting structure that eliminates traditional...
Wasserstein normalized autoencoder for anomaly detection
Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: A novel anomaly detection algorithm is presented. The Wasserstein normalized autoencoder (WNAE) is a normalized probabilistic model that minimizes the Wasserstein distance between the learned probability distribution--a Boltzmann distribution where the energy is the reconstruction error of the autoencoder--and the distribution of the training data. This algorithm has been developed and applied to the identification of semivisible jets--conical sprays of...
QUIVER: Quantum-Informed Views for Enhanced Representations in Large ML Models
Announce Type: cross Abstract: Large machine learning models benefit substantially from multimodal inputs that provide a complementary view of the same example. We introduce QUIVER (QUantum-Informed Views for Enhanced Representations, a paradigm that enriches classical data-driven features with a quantum Fisher view: a geometrically motivated, basis-independent summary of higher-order correlations captured by a variational quantum circuit (VQC) trained to perform the same task. Unlike...
Castor: CERN Advanced STORage Manager
The CERN Advanced STORage manager (CASTOR) is a hierarchical storage (i.e. has disk and tape) management system which was developed at CERN for archiving physics data (with very large data volumes, see the plot on the right). Files can be stored, listed, retrieved and remotely accessed using CASTOR command-line tools or user applications that were developed using the CASTOR API. CASTOR provides a set of access protocols such as XROOT (the main and recommended protocol) and GridFTP.

Hyperstatistics
arXiv:2604.24783v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: We propose a general approach, named by us hyperstatistics, to treat complex systems, in which Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics breaks down in domains of the system. Hyperstatistics preserves the concavity of nonadditive $q$-entropy. We obtain analytical closed-form expressions for the here proposed $q$-generalized Boltzmann factor $B_q$ considering uniform, $\gamma$, Log-normal, F, and the $q$-$\gamma$ probability distribution functions.
