Non-Hermiticity-induced chirality imbalance of Weyl Landau levels

arXiv:2606.00615v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Weyl semimetals obey a global chirality constraint: the net chiral topological charge and any associated chiral spectral flow must vanish, as required by the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem. Under magnetic fields, this constraint manifests through counter-propagating zeroth Landau levels associated with Weyl nodes of opposite chirality. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how non-Hermiticity can reshape this balance in a synthetic photonic Weyl...

NBA's claim of 'most-watched conference finals in 24 years' is misleading because of broadcast changes

The NBA is still misleading the public with deceptive press releases touting its 2026 playoff viewership. This week, the league claimed the Spurs-Thunder series was the "most-watched conference finals in 24 years," averaging 10.8 million viewers per game across NBC and Peacock. Whole-genome duplication shaped cell-type evolution in the vertebrate brain

Abstract The complex brains of vertebrates have more cell types than those of their closest relatives. Whole-genome duplications (WGDs) occurred during early vertebrate evolution1, but it is unclear whether the duplicated genes (ohnologues) facilitated cell-type evolution. Here using brain single-cell transcriptomes from five chordates—human2, mouse3, lizard4, lamprey5 and amphioxus—we report that many cell-type families with conserved core transcription factors in vertebrates do not show...

Biased sampling reduces particle settling velocities in turbidity currents

arXiv:2606.08241v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We investigate the mechanisms governing particle settling in turbidity currents using two-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian direct numerical simulations. The effective particle settling velocity is decomposed into a fluid velocity sampled at particle positions and a particle-fluid slip velocity. Their Eulerian mean profiles are obtained using a concentration-weighted average of the coarse-grained fields.

Dementia risk linked to nitrate in drinking water, study finds

Dementia risk linked to nitrate in drinking water, study finds - Date: - June 8, 2026 - Source: - Edith Cowan University - Summary: - A major long-term study of more than 54,000 adults found that where nitrate comes from may matter far more than how much you consume. People who got more nitrate from vegetables—roughly the amount in a cup of baby spinach a day—had a lower risk of developing dementia, while higher nitrate and nitrite intake from red meat, processed meat, and even drinking...
