Tibet quartz discovery boosts China’s self-sufficiency push for hi-tech materials

China has discovered a new source of high-purity quartz in its western Tibet autonomous region, potentially reducing its reliance on imports of the critical material to make solar panels and semiconductors. High-purity quartz is a gold standard manufacturing material for numerous hi-tech items, including some whose global market is dominated by China. China has relied on imports to obtain the important material, with most coming from the United States, because of a lack of domestic sources...

Unified Theory of Quartz Tuning Fork Resonators

arXiv:2606.00681v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Quartz tuning forks, functioning as electrically driven piezoelectric resonators, have long served as exceptionally stable and widely adopted timing references in diverse domains of research and industry. Yet, electrically measured resonance spectra often exhibit robust features that remain unexplained within existing theoretical descriptions. Here we develop a unified continuum electroelastic framework that combines piezoelectric...

Profiling a Rydberg-Atom Electric Field Sensor for Off-Resonant Detection of Sub-100 MHz RF Signals

arXiv:2606.10151v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present a Rydberg-Atom electric field sensor optimized to detect signals at sub-100 MHz carrier frequencies. The sensing setup employs a sapphire vapor cell that allows for detection of signals below 100~MHz -- typical vapor cells made of glass or quartz demonstrate strong screening of radio frequency (RF) signals in this frequency regime. Applied signals are detected by observing AC Stark shifts in the atomic vapor energy levels.

Ancient altercations between musk turtles and alligator gar recorded in Florida's fossil record

Ancient altercations between musk turtles and alligator gar recorded in Florida's fossil record Lisa Lock Scientific Editor Robert Egan Associate Editor Sometime between 5.5 and 5.6 million years ago, two shell crushers squared off in the languid currents of an ancient Florida river. The fossils they left behind, discovered by paleontologists at the Florida Museum of Natural History, reveal the identity of the combatants and the outcome of their encounter. In one corner, weighing in up to...

'Out-of-place' rocks reveal how a young ocean formed

'Out-of-place' rocks reveal how a young ocean formed Lisa Lock Scientific Editor Robert Egan Associate Editor Deep below the Tyrrhenian Sea offshore Italy, scientists drilled into what they thought would be dark mantle rock—and found pieces of granite that seemingly had no business being there. Those unexpected intrusions turned out to offer a rare glimpse of how a massive fault rapidly pulled deep Earth rocks toward the surface during the opening of a young ocean basin. "When we first...

The intracies of modern camera lens repair (2024)

Sigma 45mm f/2.8 Lens Repair & Analysis [05.12.24] I have a camera gear collection problem and as part of my personal 12 step plan, I restrict myself from purchasing functioning lenses. This sounds illogical, and it frankly is, but it's very hard for me to resist heavily discounted lenses.

Development of flash lithium evaporators for NSTX-U

arXiv:2606.00777v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present results of in-vacuo refill and operation of a lithium evaporator in LTX-$\beta$ as the culmination of a larger design basis for a flash lithium evaporator (f-LITER) for wall conditioning in the National Spherical Torus Experiment Upgrade (NSTX-U). The new f-LITER is intended to deliver fresh lithium to plasma-facing components (PFCs) in both the upper and lower-divertor as well as the center-column and outboard regions for...
