Orientation Dependence of R2' in White Matter: Digital Characterization, Modelling and Implications for Studying Brain Physiology

Introduction R2* is the transverse relaxation rate of tissue, influenced by local magnetic field inhomogeneities arising from susceptibility differences. It decomposes into R2 and R2', where R2' is the reversible component most sensitive to blood oxygenation and forms the basis of the BOLD fMRI signal. Although orientation dependence of R2 and R2* in white matter (WM) has been attributed primarily to myelin, the vascular contribution to R2' has not been systematically characterized.

Proton FLASH preserves neurocognition across delivery techniques: implications for clinical translation in pediatric brain tumors

Background: Radiation therapy is integral to the curative treatment of childhood brain tumors but contributes to late neurocognitive impairment in survivors. FLASH (ultra-high dose rate, >40Gy/s) reduces normal-tissue toxicity in preclinical models, and proton-FLASH is currently the only modality capable of delivering ultra-high dose rates to the deep targets, such as pediatric brain tumors. However, two questions remain unresolved before clinical translation: (1) whether the FLASH effect...

Experimental observation of strong field stabilization

arXiv:2606.00242v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Strong oscillating fields are expected to tear apart bound quantum states. Theoretical studies predict a striking reversal: that as the field intensity is raised above some threshold, bound states like atoms can become increasingly stable, accompanied by a spatial bifurcation of the bound state wavefunction. This strong field stabilization was predicted decades ago in the context of atoms in pulsed laser fields, but has resisted experimental...

Magnetometry with Broadband Microwave Fields in Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

arXiv:2510.11720v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are optically addressable and versatile light-matter interfaces with practical application in magnetic field sensing, offering the ability to operate at room temperature and reach sensitivities below pT/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$. We propose an approach to simultaneously probe all of the magnetically sensitive states using a broadband microwave field and demonstrate that it can be used to measure the...

Hybrid-Field 6D Movable Antenna for Terahertz Communications: Channel Modeling and Estimation

arXiv:2505.04753v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: In this work, we study a six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA)-enhanced Terahertz (THz) network that supports a large number of users with a few antennas by controlling the three-dimensional (3D) positions and 3D rotations of antenna surfaces/subarrays at the base station (BS). However, the short wavelength of THz signals combined with a large 6DMA movement range extends the near-field region. As a result, a user can be in the far-field...

'From STEM to earn': High school programs aimed at diversifying the field drive gains in college, salaries

'From STEM to earn': High school programs aimed at diversifying the field drive gains in college, salaries Lisa Lock Scientific Editor Andrew Zinin Lead Editor High school students participating in pipeline programs aimed at increasing diversity in STEM fields are more likely to enroll in—and graduate from—elite colleges with a related degree. In addition, such improvements raised their predicted earnings by anywhere from 3% to 15%, according to a study co-authored by a University of...

White Sox rookie Braden Montgomery becomes fifth player ever to hit walk-off homer in his Major League debut

Chicago White Sox rookie Braden Montgomery had just about the best Major League Baseball debut imaginable on Tuesday night. Montgomery, who came over to Chicago from the Boston Red Sox in the trade for Garrett Crochet, has become one of baseball's top prospects during his time in the White Sox system. In some rankings, he's reached as high as the top 25 overall.

MLB Power Rankings: An all-NL top 3 -- but who cam...

Atlanta's reign atop our list continues for the fourth consecutive week, as the Braves narrowly beat out the Dodgers for the No. 1 spot in Week 10. It was a big week for the National League as the Brewers round out our top three, marking the first time this season that the top three teams have all been from the NL. The Pirates, Phillies and Padres join the trio in our top 10, as the Yankees, Rays, Mariners and Guardians represent the American League in the top 10.

Fast Bounded-Independence Functions and Their Duals

arXiv:2606.07009v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We continue the study of {\em fast} functions, computable by linear-size circuits, that share useful properties of random functions. Motivated by cryptographic applications, we generalize and improve on previous results in this area, obtaining the following results: - For any constant $t$, we construct a fast $t$-wise independent hash function with algebraic degree $\log_2 t$ (over $\mathbb F_2$), simultaneously optimizing both asymptotic...
