On Information Self-Locking in Reinforcement Learning for Active Reasoning of LLM agents

Announce Type: replace Abstract: Reinforcement learning (RL) has become a de facto paradigm for building LLM-based agents that act, interact, and reason over extended task horizons. However, in active reasoning where agents must elicit new observations through interaction with the environment to solve the task, we find that outcome-based RL can induce a systematic failure mode which we call information self-locking (SeL): agents fail both to elicit informative feedback and to internalize...

Approximating Probabilistic Inference in Statistical EL with Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Computer Science > Artificial Intelligence [Submitted on 16 Jul 2024 (v1), last revised 2 Jun 2026 (this version, v2)] Title:Approximating Probabilistic Inference in Statistical EL with Knowledge Graph Embeddings View PDF HTML (experimental)Abstract:Statistical information is ubiquitous but drawing valid conclusions from it is prohibitively hard. We explain how knowledge graph embeddings can be used to approximate probabilistic inference efficiently using the example of Statistical EL (SEL),...

Building iOS Apps with Doom Emacs

I shipped SPEEM, my first iOS app, from Doom Emacs. I don’t mean I just edited a few files in Emacs and switched back when it was time to build. I mean the whole loop: write Swift, build, boot a simulator, install the app, launch it, stream logs, restart LSP, scaffold new projects.

Larch: Learned Query Optimization for Semantic Predicates

Announce Type: new Abstract: With the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), many database systems introduced semantic operators that enabled analytical queries over unstructured data (e.g. text, images, videos). Semantic operators typically incur high inference costs and latencies making semantic (AI) SQL queries challenging to apply on large scale datasets. At the same time, their semantic nature leads database engines to treat them as black boxes, making AISQL queries difficult to optimize.

Amplified Arctic iceberg traffic reshapes benthic biodiversity

Abstract The Arctic is undergoing rapid warming, resulting in retreating sea ice and glaciers1, yet how cryospheric changes propagate into the deep ocean remains poorly understood2. Here we identify a climate-driven mechanism linking accelerating glacier disintegration to an increase in deep-sea hard-bottom habitats far beyond calving fronts. Seafloor observations in Fram Strait show a localized increase in the density and patchiness of dropstones delivered by debris-laden icebergs.

DOPPLER: Dual-Policy Learning for Device Assignment in Asynchronous Dataflow Graphs

Announce Type: replace Abstract: We study the problem of assigning operations in a dataflow graph to devices to minimize execution time in a work-conserving system, with emphasis on complex machine learning workloads. Prior learning-based methods often struggle due to three key limitations: (1) reliance on bulk-synchronous systems like TensorFlow, which under-utilize devices due to barrier synchronization; (2) lack of awareness of the scheduling mechanism of underlying systems when designing...

Royal wedding rerun as Peter Phillip marriage organised by same planner as his original

Royal wedding rerun as Peter Phillip marriage organised by same planner as his original Peter Phillips is set to marry NHS nurse Harriet Sperling in an 'intimate' Cotswolds ceremony - with King Charles, Queen Camilla and many senior royals expected to attend Peter Phillips is set to tie the knot for the second time next week - and is using the same wedding planner as his first time around. The 48-year-old nephew to the King is due to marry NHS nurse Harriet Sperling in the Cotswolds next...

Powering up a module from the IBM 604: an electronic calculator from 1948

1948 was an interesting time for computing. For decades, businesses had used punch card equipment that added and sorted electromechanically. Now these electromechanical relays and counting wheels were being used to build room-filling general-purpose computers such as Harvard Mark I (1944) and IBM's SSEC (1948).
