The Speed of Prototyping in the Age of AI
Note: These are personal reflections on how my workflow has shifted over the past year, not a pitch for any tool. Your mileage will (and probably should) vary. A few years back I wrote about my love of throwaway prototypes; those little proof-of-concepts that exist purely to get an idea out of your head and into something tangible.
Invasive and Non-Invasive Neural Decoding of Motor Performance in Parkinson's Disease for Personalized Deep Brain Stimulation
arXiv:2603.27750v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Decoding motor performance from brain signals offers promising avenues for adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD). In a two-center cohort of 19 PD patients executing a drawing task, we decoded motor performance from electroencephalography (n=15) and, critically for clinical translation, electrocorticography (n=4). Within each session, patients performed the task under DBS on and DBS off.
Development of a Multi-Purpose Optical TPC for Neutron-Induced Reaction Studies at SARAF
arXiv:2605.31382v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Neutron-induced reactions play a central role in stellar and Big Bang nucleosynthesis models. Yet many of the cross sections remain poorly constrained at astrophysically relevant energies. To address these needs, we are developing a multi-purpose Optical Time Projection Chamber (OTPC) optimized for precision neutron-reaction studies at the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF)
China’s rail gun milestone: guided projectile prototype passes real firing test
China’s rail gun milestone: guided projectile prototype passes real firing test Breakthrough as a delicate silicon shell fitted with a guidance chip is shot from an electromagnetic rail gun, survives and records the ride Inside a metal shell being hurled from a standstill to a speed many times faster than sound, the pressure could be as high as an elephant standing on every square inch of a human body. To make matters worse, an invisible, violent magnetic storm is raging through its path. A...
Ceiling, floor and NBA comps for the top 12 prospe...
Welcome to June, which means it's officially NBA draft time. In a little over three weeks (June 23 and 24, ESPN/ABC/ESPN App), the draft will unfold at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where all 60 picks will be revealed for a talented 2026 class. Though the league's 30 teams are still working on their draft boards, it's never too early to play everyone's favorite parlor game: comparing incoming prospects to NBA players -- past and present.
Journey to JPEG XL: open-source experiments shaped the future of image coding
Building the Next Generation Image Standard The internet runs on images. Since the early days of the web, there has been a relentless tension between visual fidelity and bandwidth. For decades, the industry relied on the venerable JPEG standard for images loading fast.
Porting the ThinkPad X61 to Coreboot
Porting the ThinkPad x61 to coreboot Table of Contents An introduction to my IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad addiction Over 10 years ago I got my first ThinkPad x60. I got interested in free software by reading the about GNU page in the GNU Emacs editor. Free software back then and certainly now is quite usable, typically without much closed-source software.
Can You Stop a Hypersonic Missile?
Can You Stop a Hypersonic Missile? The headlines say yes. Patriot crews shot down a Kinzhal over Kyiv on the night of May 4, 2023.
ITP-STDP: An Intrinsic-Timing Power-of-Two Learning Engine for On-Chip SNN Training
Announce Type: new Abstract: Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have the potential to emerge as the third generation of neural networks and have attracted increasing attention across a wide range of applications. However, the large number of synaptic connections in SNNs leads to intensive weight-update computation by on-chip learning algorithms during training, resulting in substantial hardware resource utilization and energy consumption. Among existing SNN learning algorithms,...
2027 recruiting class rankings: Miami surges into ...
As anticipated, commitments are on the rise and expected to continue to tick up. Miami was a key mover as it pushed into the top-five with multiple four-star additions. One of those was SC Next 300 DE Jaiden Bryant who flipped from LSU.
