For some patients primary care might be the first point of contact to discuss feelings about suicide, offering an opportunity for early intervention to reduce suicide risk.In a recent BMJ clinical update (doi:10.1136/bmj-2025-086834), Stapper and colleagues reviewed the evidence for identifying and treating suicidal ideation (defined as thoughts, images, or plans) within adult populations.3 As outlined by Stapper et al, specific clinical diagnoses serve as major indicators of risk.
