He had several postings, including to Berlin, where he was medical officer for Spandau Prison (one of whose inmates was Rudolf Hess), and to Northern Ireland during the Troubles. A pathway to surgery did not emerge, so he left the army and went into general practice in Halifax with his first wife, Lesley, where they remained for the rest of their careers.They both became police surgeons and were involved in developing forensic medicine as a specialty in the aftermath of the Bradford football fire disaster.
