A money-saving expert claims that Brits could be losing on the National Lottery, even if they get some matching numbers. It comes after the Lotto draw, which is played every Wednesday and Saturday, has undergone its biggest change to date, giving more players a chance to win from June 7.
The National Lottery website claims that the original game is being updated based on customer research. It claims that players "would like more chances to win a prize and more chances to become a millionaire" - and the new "two chances to win" system doubles the odds.
The game itself remains pretty much the same, with a selection of six winning balls chosen at random. The difference to games played after June 7 is that there will always be a second chance to play.
For every £2 line of numbers on a Lotto ticket, players have double the chance of matching the winning numbers, but the prizes that can be claimed are seen as an issue by some. Jordon Cox, known for sharing money-saving tips on ITV's This Morning, took to social media and explained his stance.
He told his 351,000 Instagram followers that the game, which has run since 1994, might be seen by some as no longer worth playing.
In his video, Jordon said: "There is no point playing the Lotto draw after today (June 7). It's now changed so, instead of one draw a night, there are two draws and your ticket can win on both.
"Sounds like you've got double the chance [of winning]? Well, the prizes you win have just been slashed."
Under the new game rules, matching numbers will entitle players to less prize money than before. See below for the changes:
- Match five numbers and the Bonus Ball: £1m
- Match five numbers: Now £1,000, was £1,750
- Match four numbers: Now £50, was £140
- Match three numbers: Now £10, was £30
- Match two numbers: Now £1, was a Free Lotto Lucky Dip
Jordon said: "Sure, you could win twice in one game. But, in the unlikely event you do, you're still less than you were before. The biggest kick in the teeth [is that] the most likely prize for matching two numbers is less than what you pay for one ticket."
In the caption of his video, Jordon claimed: "I know people play the Lottery with the hopes of a huge cash win, but save your money. This draw isn’t worth it. With these new changes, you probably would have better expected value by picking another draw with better returns."
The National Lottery is set to launch a new game this summer. It will launch the Powerball game which will see UK players pay £4 per line to compete with their US counterparts as part of the world's biggest jackpot game.
National Lottery operator Allwyn was approached for comment regarding the video. A spokesperson told the Mirror: "This change will strengthen Lotto’s position as the nation’s ‘millionaire maker’ – going from it creating around two millionaires a week to over six.
"This is based on the fact that the change is expected to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires from around 140 a year to around 345. Because people can now win more than once from a single £2 Lotto line and will win more often also means that, over the course of the year, regular players will likely experience a net benefit in terms of prize money won – for the same purchase price.
"Players we tested the game with were happy that they’d have two opportunities in every draw to win the £1m+ prizes (at the jackpot and match 5+Bonus Ball tiers) and understood that some of the fixed prizes at the lower tiers have been reduced to give them these extra chances of becoming a millionaire."
