RSCPA urges 'do not buy popular summer toy' as it 'poses deadly risk' to animals The animal welfare charity urged people to think twice before using the toys Brits have been urged not to buy a popular toy that a welfare charity says poses a deadly risk to animals. The RSPCA highlighted the risk in a new plea shared on social media this week. Taking to Facebook, the animal welfare charity explained that flying rings could kill animals if they end up in rivers or seas. While the toys are often popular during the summer, people have been urged to choose safer products when shopping for outdoor toys. As the charity explained, it is the open centre of the ring that poses a threat. If an animal gets the ring stuck on their neck, it could be life-threatening. Offering an example, the RSPCA shared the story of a seal rescue that could have ended in tragedy. The post said: "A simple outdoor activity can have devastating consequences. This seal was found with a flying ring tightly embedded around her neck, causing a serious, and deep injury. It's likely this was embedded for months before she was spotted and rescued. "Thanks to the dedication of the team at RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre, she was given the care she needed to recover. Unfortunately, many animals caught up in similar situations aren't as lucky. "Please avoid buying or using these types of flying rings, which can pose a deadly risk to wildlife. This summer, acts of kindness - whether it's picking up litter, choosing safer products, or helping protect local wildlife - can make all the difference!" The RSPCA website explains that litter poses a serious risk to the UK's wildlife, with the charity receiving, on average, 10 calls a day about animals affected by litter. Everyday items such as plastic bags, plastic can holders, balloons, sky lanterns, containers, elastic bands, and vapes could all endanger animals. For instance, animals could suffocate or choke if they come across a plastic bag. People are asked to tie a knot in the top of the bag before recylcing them in order to help prevent accidents. Similarly, balloons can pose a choking hazard if an animal attempts to eat them. Balloons should be deflated, cut up, and safely disposed of in a bin. The charity said: "Everyday objects that seem perfectly safe can become hazardous when animals come into close contact with them. By binning our rubbish safely instead of littering, we're making choices that could save many lives. "Protecting animals from harmful rubbish is easy. Dispose of your rubbish responsibly by recycling, reusing or simply putting it in the bin!"
