Abbott says his government was a 'letdown' to many Liberals
Former prime minister Tony Abbott says Liberal voters felt "let down" by a succession of past coalition governments, including his own, which has led to the rise of One Nation.
At his United States book launch in Washington DC, Abbott fielded questions in a wide-ranging interview moderated by former NSW premier Dominic Perrottet.
He reflected on a worldwide trend of "political insurgencies, particularly on the Right", and compared One Nation to the MAGA movement in the US.
"In the States, it was, if you like, an in-house insurgency. Donald Trump managed what was effectively a hostile takeover of the Republican Party from within," he said.
"Our problem in Australia is that the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison government was felt by many of its strongest supporters to have been a letdown.
"If the people you vote for consistently let you down, you will end up voting for someone else. It's a political marketplace"
Last month, Abbott returned to political life, becoming the Liberal Party's new federal president at a time when both major parties are flailing in public opinion polls.
One Nation has surged ahead of both the Labor and Liberal parties in recent Newspoll, YouGov and Redbridge polls.
Reflecting on the 2025 election, Abbott said a "lack of conviction and a lack of political confidence" brought the Liberal Party undone after a "dreadful year" in which the Coalition broke up twice.

Australia to join partners in imposing further sanctions on West Bank settlers
Australia will impose further sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank in response to "horrific" settler violence against Palestinians.
In a joint statement, Australia, Canada, France, Norway and the UK announced they would take coordinated action to hold "extremist settlers" accountable.
The statement says "violent settlers" have been able to act with impunity with the support of the Israeli government.
It says the countries will be prepared to take more action if the Israeli government doesn't take urgent steps to address the situation.
"We continue to urge the government of Israel to take action to ensure meaningful accountability for violence in the West Bank," the statement says.
"The government of Israel should ensure every attack is swiftly and thoroughly investigated, take action against the outposts and organisations that allow violence to flourish, and stop the incitement of violence."

Bridget McKenzie doesn't rule out coalition with One Nation
Labor MP Josh Burns and Nationals frontbencher Bridget McKenzie have stepped up to speak on Channel Seven's political panel.
Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie has left the door open to a coalition between the Liberals, Nationals and One Nation.
Yesterday, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor left the door open to doing a preference deal with the right-wing party at the next election.
Pressed on Channel Seven whether she would be open to a coalition between the three parties, McKenzie doesn't say she'd be opposed to it.
"The people will cast their vote and we will deal with the outcome of that post-election, because we have to get rid of the Labor Party.
"I'm open to getting rid of the Australian Labor Party and getting Anthony Albanese out of The Lodge in Canberra."
