American tourist left red-faced after planning 'UK day out' from Edinburgh to Cornwall A poster who claimed to be an American on their first trip overseas attracted mocking comments as they shared their ambitious itinerary online, which included driving from Scotland to Cornwall during a week-long trip An American planning a week-long trip to the UK was mocked after taking to Reddit to share their ambitious itinerary, which included visits to the Lake District, Scotland, and Cornwall in an incredibly short space of time. Taking to the UKtravel sub-Reddit, the poster started by introducing themselves as "4 Midwestern Americans, 50 something mom and dad, adult children 23M & 18F", who'd be arriving in Newcastle and hiring a car to start their adventure. Their itinerary started with a Saturday arrival, and sensibly, time to drive to their accommodation, "shop for incidentals" and get some rest after their long, transatlantic flight. But the plans soon took a turn for the stressful, with the family hoping to drive to the Lake District on Sunday to "get familiar driving on the opposite side of the road", followed by a Monday drive to Scotland. The poster hoped to take in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and asked whether a train would be better. Even more ambitious was their itinerary for Tuesday and Wednesday: "Husband and I are driving to Polperro Cornwall for hotel stay overnight. Train to Bodmin Parkway/Taxi to Polperro instead?" Polperro is over 500-miles from Edinburgh and around a nine-hour drive. This was then followed by plans to visit London on Thursday for a hop on hop off bus tour. Thankfully, the poster had left the Friday free for some rest, but admitted they might "try to see Stonehenge or a castle if ambitious". Members of the subreddit were quick to mock, with one saying sarcastically: "I can’t see how this itinerary can be improved. Perhaps a half day in Shetland on Wednesday afternoon?" Another suggested: "Quick trip to Paris from London could definitely be squeezed in", while another joked: "Can you call a visit to the Lake District really complete if you haven't even seen the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower? Friday afternoon is still wide open!" While others were more direct. One said: "Absolutely ridiculous. I'm sorry but come on, Cornwall for one night? Then to London then back to Stonehenge (hint, look where Stonehenge is on a map...)". Another pointed out: "The only thing you're going to see with that itinerary is the inside of your hire car." Some comments were more sympathetic, pointing out that Americans are used to driving longer distances than Brits, and that the original poster may not have realised that driving in winter would be more complex in the cold and dark weather. Despite the mocking tone of replies, the poster came back to thank Reddit for the replies and admitted the feedback had helped change their mind on certain plans, posting: "We're going to stay flexible and try to maintain a sense of humor and sense of wonder. I'm looking forward to the adventure, hoping for the best but accepting of the reality it won't go to plan and we'll have to adjust." Have a story you want to share? Email us at [email protected]
