M6 traffic live: Serious lorry crash sparks severe delays on Lancashire motorway
A lorry has jack-knifed and spilled fuel following a crash on the M6 in Lancashire between J35 at Carnforth and J34 at Lancaster causing major delays
Motorists are facing travel chaos with both carriageways of the M6 closed in Lancashire following a serious lorry crash.
Emergency services have rushed to the scene of the incident between J35 at Carnforth and J34 at Lancaster.
National Highways reports the motorway is closed due to a jack-knifed HGV while a fuel spillage has also been reported.
Traffic is building up for several miles on the southbound side while there are also delays on the M6 northbound. AA Traffic news reports 'severe delays' of nearly 70 minutes on the M6 southbound.
Key Events
Road users are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol visible on local road signs, states National Highways.
Here is the diversion route:
- Exit the M6 southbound at J36 and join the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale.
- Take a right on to the A683 towards Lancaster.
- Continue on the A683 through Nether, Burrow, Tunstall, Melling, Hornby, Claughton and Caton and re-join M6 at J34.
Please be aware that there is a bridge with a 4.7m / 15'6" height restriction at Caton.
A jack-knifed lorry is covering three lanes of the southbound carriageway of the M6 and a fuel spill is complicating the incident.
National Highways said: "The M6 southbound between J35 and J34 in Lancashire is closed following a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle which has jack‑knifed across all three lanes.
"The incident, which began shortly after 10:15, has resulted in a full carriageway closure while emergency services respond, with a reported fuel spillage adding further complexity to the scene.
"National Highways is working closely with police and emergency services at the scene to support their response and ensure the safety of all road users."
National Highways has warned the lane closures on the M6 southbound are expected to continue until at least 2pm.
Lancashire Police says the M6 is now shut in both directions.
A force spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with a road traffic collision on the M6. As a result we have closed the motorway in both directions between J34 and J35.
"There is currently heavy traffic at Junction 34 and the Bay Gateway and will take some time to clear. We are working to reopen the motorway as soon as possible. Please avoid the area if you can. "
National Highways North West posted on X: "The #M6 southbound between J35 (#Carnforth) and J34 (#Lancaster) is closed due to a collision involving a jack-knifed HGV.
"A fuel spillage has also been reported. Emergency services are on scene. There are delays of 10 minutes on approach."
