I've built a £6,000 England World Cup grandstand at my pub - fans are flooding in The Railway Tavern has built a giant grandstand for hundreds of fans to watch the World Cup this summer An England pub owner has gone all out for the World Cup, constructing a massive grandstand capable of holding hundreds of fans for this summer's tournament. Paul Sandford has erected the impressive structure at The Railway Tavern in Dereham, Norfolk, splashing out more than £6,000 in the process. The grandstand holds around 400 people, with additional standing room allowing over 700 supporters to soak up the action in authentic stadium-style surroundings. A team of scaffolders spent more than a week constructing the remarkable feature, which also boasts a VIP area complete with waitress service and an American-inspired theme. "I've had interest from all over the country," Paul said. "Loads of people want to come and watch the games here. We're already fully booked up. It's really exciting. This is going to be the ultimate place to watch England this summer. It will be a festival of football." He added: "The atmosphere will be unbelievable. We are counting the days down until it comes alive." Paul also hopes the grandstand will help raise vital funds for Dereham Cancer Care, a charity close to the pub's heart. Meanwhile, not every pub has been so welcoming, with one venue drawing criticism after banning sportswear ahead of the World Cup. The Station introduced a smart/casual-only dress code, turning away anyone sporting hoodies, hats or athletic wear, while also implementing a last entry time of 11pm and closing at 1am. The new rules apply on Fridays and Saturdays after 9pm. A spokesperson for the pub in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, said: "As a few of you are already aware, we've had a few changes to how we operate recently, and we just wanted to communicate them to everyone." The announcement ignited debate, with some questioning the timing given the imminent arrival of the World Cup. Some regulars said it will drive customers away, while others have welcomed the change. Alex Field was sceptical about the decision. He said: "There's a World Cup around the corner and a Champions League Aston Villa season upcoming and they're banning sportswear on Saturday, it's baffling. I do believe customers will go elsewhere if they can't wear England gear and shorts. "I will continue to drink there but it may just be a move away from there before Villa fixtures on a Saturday as me and my friends like wearing our colours. So it's more a feeling of disappointment than animosity toward the venue."
