Two people have been killed and nine more have been treated for smoke inhalation following a fire at a property on the Spanish island of Mallorca
Two people have been killed and several more injured after a fire at a tourist hotspot for Brits.
The incident happened at a property on the Spanish island of Mallorca with nine people needing for treatment for smoke inhalation as well as two people tragically dying, a Civil Guard spokesperson said.
The fire broke out around 5am on the third floor of a residential building in the Magaluf area, the Civil Guard said in a statement.
Residents tried unsuccessfully to put out the blaze, which spread to the rest of the building, it added. More than 12 people were evacuated with smoke seen for miles.
The flames were extinguished about two hours later with the victims' nationalities were not immediately known and the Civil Guard said it was investigating the cause of the fire.
Magaluf is a popular beach and nightlife destination among British tourists, located around 14 miles from Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Mediterranean island.
The fire started on the third floor at the Edificio Trianón on C/ Federico García Lorca, close to Punta Ballena. The ferocity of the flames filled the entire building with smoke and it appears the victims tried to escape their apartments but were unable to do so.
According to the Calvià Town Hall, residents in the block of flats also attempted to extinguish the flames without success with the fire spreading rapidly through the building and to upper floors.
The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual went to the scene of the tragedy where emergency services remain. He said that "it seemed like a minor fire, but it turned out to be very serious".
Speaking to local reporters he said: "We are devastated, very sad. The two deaths are confirmed, and there is a third person critically injured at Son Espases Hospital, whom we hope will recover.
"It seemed like a minor fire , but it turned out to be very serious, with a very virulent blaze that started on the third floor of a nine-story building," Amengual explained.
The mayor added that there were factors which made the situation worse with firstly the specific location of the flat on fire which made it difficult for firefighters to reach it. And secondly he said "after the fire broke out, several people went to the stairwell instead of staying in their apartments; this could be one of the causes of the deaths."
