Daughter and her husband left her mum fighting for life after smashing into home Paula and Malcolm McGill were jailed after leaving Kirsty Barrie, 56, with life-threatening injuries during a Clydebank assault in the early hours of the morning, the court heard A daughter and her husband savagely attacked her own mother in her home after battering down the door to her flat. The 56-year-old mother was left bloodied and forced to crawl for help after the brutal attack. She was kicked in the head and dragged by her hair in the attack by her own daughter and daughter's husband. Paula and Malcolm McGill left Kirsty Barrie, 56, with life-threatening injuries and a bled on the brain after forcing their way into her flat in Clydebank on May 6, 2024. The pair have been jailed for four and a half years. The High Court in Glasgow was told that the mother and her 41 year-old daughter had been estranged at the time and had not spoken to one another for around seven years, despite living close to each other, reports Glasgow Live. In the early hours of the morning, police were called to a noise complaint at a neighbouring flat to the couple. Officers attended the McGills' door, where Paula McGill claimed she had not heard anything, and they departed. Around 10 minutes later, Miss Barrie heard her buzzer sound. Upon looking out, she discovered her daughter and son-in-law outside her property. Miss Barrie refused to let them in. Shortly afterwards, however, her front door was kicked open by 43-year-old Malcolm McGill. Prosecutor David McDonald then explained: "Both McGills entered - Miss Barrie said she was in a state of shock. Paula McGill was shouting before Miss Barrie was dragged to the floor by the hair, some of it being ripped out. She kicked her multiple times on the face and head as she lay on the floor. "Malcolm McGill stamped on Miss Barrie's ribs once. She felt them 'crunching'. Miss Barrie believes the whole assault lasted no longer than 30 seconds." The McGills fled the scene but were captured on a doorbell camera leaving the area. The injured victim managed to crawl to her bedroom before a neighbour discovered her and raised the alarm. Officers arrived to find the bloodied mother, who told them she had been attacked by her daughter and son-in-law. With no ambulances available, police were forced to transport her to hospital themselves. She had suffered a brain bleed, fractures to her nose and ribs, a collapsed lung, severe bruising and a wound to her lip. Mr McDonald said: "It was assessed at the time that the injuries would require ongoing treatment and further specialist input." She was discharged from hospital on May 12 2024. The McGills were arrested that same morning. Paula McGill initially claimed she had been at a friend's house at the time, before admitting she had been in her mother's close — yet denied carrying out the assault. Malcolm McGill made no comment. Forensic evidence tied the pair to the attack, including blood marks on Malcolm McGill's Crocs shoes. Both pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Miss Barrie to her severe injury, permanent impairment and to the danger of her life. Lord Mulholland stated the custodial sentences would have been six years each, were it not for the guilty pleas. He also imposed a lifelong non-harassment order on both, prohibiting them from approaching or contacting Miss Barrie. The judge said: "Breaching this order is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment."
