Man buys food at London's 'most expensive' fish and chip shop and price stuns him A man visited what he claimed to be the "most expensive" fish and chip shop in London and shared his candid reaction. He admitted the price left him pretty floored A man recently paid a visit to what he described as the "most expensive" fish and chip shop in London, and he was left completely gobsmacked by the cost of the meal. Ishan Ali documented his outing to the Mayfair eatery, and he had plenty to say about what he uncovered. As a self-confessed foodie, Ishan was eager to see what all the fuss was about, despite being taken aback by the eye-watering prices. Nevertheless, he decided to share his honest verdict in a TikTok video on his personal platform, where he regularly posts reviews on all things food and drink. It's not the first time a story like this has made waves either. Previously, another fish and chip shop left a man astounded too. Ishan said: "Let's try the most expensive fish and chips in London. We are on our way to Mayfair Chippy. Now the name itself says quite a lot actually. It's a fish and chip shop in Mayfair and, when I tell you the price, it's absolutely shocking. "I'm not going to lie to you, am I fan of fish and chips? I'm a bit 50/50. I do prefer the chips more than the fish. However, the presentation of this was absolutely fantastic. "It comes with curry sauce, mushy peas and Tartar sauce. I'm not going to lie to you, the chips were seasoned perfectly. You can't go wrong with a battered fish. "Anyway, the fish was really nice. There were so much chips at the bottom and the Tartar sauce was absolutely phenomenal. The curry sauce was a good curry sauce as well. I did struggle to finish everything." In the clip, he claimed the meal came to £30.00; however, on the website, it's priced at £26.95. It's likely, therefore, that he either rounded up the figure or ordered a few extras alongside his meal. While some viewers in the comments also felt the price was on the high side, there are reasons behind the cost. Jamie Jones, one of the shop's directors, shed some light on what's been happening behind the scenes. He revealed the business has been trading for over 11 years, admitting the last few years have been "tough" for fish and chip shops. The price of haddock is said to have soared by 80%, yet Jamie insisted they've worked hard to shield customers from the brunt of those rises as much as possible. "We want it to be a place for everybody but fish and chips are becoming a luxury product," he explained. "We employ over 150 people across two businesses. "We give over £20,000 worth of free school meals over the year. We are trying to support customers as much as we can do." On top of that, they are striving to deliver a quality product in one of London's priciest areas. While online reviews are always welcome, he pointed out that people need to appreciate what's happening behind closed doors too. Several factors can drive up the cost. VAT, for instance, plays a significant role. As fish and chips are served hot for immediate consumption, they are subject to the standard 20% UK VAT rate. Some industry figures are actively fighting back against this, arguing that it wipes out a fifth of every sale before the cost of the fish is even taken into account. On top of that, wholesale prices for certain fish have rocketed due to tightening global quotas and fishing restrictions. The cost of potatoes, cooking oil and packaging has also shot up considerably over recent years. Jamie added: "People need education about it to understand what is happening behind the scenes right now. "You need to be sure you understand and then you can give a fair review. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but we are doing everything we can to bring a good price and product."
