Prestigious Weather Photographer of the Year contest opens with spectacular snaps showcased Some breathtaking photos from across the world have been displayed and with a prize on offer for the most striking image of weather taken this year, will you be entering? The race to be named Weather Photographer of the Year is on with some incredbile images of Mother Nature in action displayed, including shots of a circular rainbow, a Texas storm and a UFO-style cloud. A range of winning images from last year has been shown off by the Royal Meteorological Society for the prestigious competition. Now entering its second decade, the competition, which opens today, invites snappers from around the globe to submit striking images that capture the power, beauty and impact of weather. Organisers say it celebrates outstanding photography that parades both dramatic weather events and the growing influence of climate change. Other winning images from last year include clouds appearing like waves over the Czech Republic, fishermen in the rain in Myanmar and dramatic sea conditions at Newhaven on the UK’s south coast. Prof Liz Bentley FRMetS, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, said: "The Weather Photographer of the Year competition continues to showcase the remarkable ways in which weather shapes our world, from moments of natural beauty to events of significant impact. "As our climate changes, these images play an increasingly important role in helping people understand and engage with the science behind weather and climate." The competition is free to enter and open to photographers of all levels, from seasoned professionals to enthusiastic amateurs and winners will be announced in November.
