The Boston community is reeling after two kids were robbed at gunpoint while stationed at thier their lemonade stand.
The stand, run by two siblings in South Boston, was robbed Wednesday afternoon by two suspects who remain at large, according to the Boston Police Department. One of the suspects flashed a gun that was in his waistband before they took off with the kids’ cash box, police said.
David Byrne, 12, told CBS Boston he and his 11-year-old sister were running the stand when one of the suspects snatched the cash box and “showed us the gun.”
“My sister, she put her hands up, and I said, 'You can have it.’ But after that, I was a little annoyed because we were 12 and 11, and you shouldn't really do that,” he added.
Investigators shared surveillance photos that appear to show the masked suspects running with a pink box after the robbery. Police also posted a short video that shows them walking in the area around the time of the incident.
Police have not made any arrests and the suspects are still unknown as of Friday morning, Sgt. Detective John Boyle told The Independent the case remains under active investigation.
Jennifer Byrne, the kids’ mother, told 7 News Boston she learned about the robbery while she was at work.
“They called me, I’m at work. They’re hysterical and say, ‘Someone just came with a gun and took all our money,” she recalled.
Their father, David Byrne, added: “It was heartbreaking, it was chilling. I was honestly like, ‘this can’t be real.’”
Now, the community is showing up to support the kids.
Nicole and Jonathan Raukohl, friends of the Byrne family, told CBS Boston they’re organizing a lemonade sale for the neighborhood to raise money for a local gun violence prevention organization. The siblings’ friends also helped them paint a new lemonade stand after the robbery.
"I'm angry, I'm angry that this happened in this community that we love. We're not just going to let that happen, this is safe place usually and for this to happen is incredibly sad,” Nicole Raukohl told CBS Boston.
"It's safe, it's fun and they literally do this every day, and this is one thing that happened. So of course it's awful, right, but we want them to know we're not going to stop them playing on the street, we're not going to stop them hanging out with the kids around,” Jonathan Raukohl added.
