Girl, 17, stabbed in the neck in broad daylight as armed police swarm street A 17-year-old girl has been rushed to hospital after she was stabbed in the back of the neck in a horror broad daylight attack in Brierfield, near Nelson A girl has been stabbed in the back of the neck on a busy residential road in broad daylight. Police, including armed officers, swarmed the scene in Brierfield, near Nelson, in Lancashire. The 17-year-old was rushed to hospital and a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Lancashire Police said officers were called to Wood Street at 3.06pm on Friday following reports of the stabbing and a cordon remains at the scene. A spokesperson for the force said that there will be extra patrols in the area and an appeal has been made for anyone with information or footage to get in touch. They said: "We were called at 3.06pm today to Wood Street, Brierfield, to a report of stabbing. It was reported that a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted and suffered a stab injury to her neck. "Officers, some of them armed, attended and a 30-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of attempted murder. The girl was taken to hospital for treatment to a stab wound in the back of her neck." And in an update Nelson, Brierfield and Barrowford Police said: "You will have seen police activity in Brierfield this afternoon and evening and we want to tell you why. At 3.06pm today we were called to Wood Street, Brierfield, to a report of stabbing. "It was reported to us that a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted and suffered a stab injury to her neck. Officers attended and a 30-year-old man from Brierfield was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of attempted murder. He is currently in custody. "The girl was taken to hospital for treatment. This was a serious incident but thankfully her injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing and she has been communicating with our officers and medical staff. We know that this will cause alarm in the local community and extra patrols will be in the area over the weekend to provide reassurance. If you have any concerns, please speak to any of our officers. People have taken to social media to express their shock at what happened in the small town with around 8,000 residents. One person wrote on Facebook: "So glad the girl has no life threatening injuries."
