Elon Musk is well known for running some of the world's biggest companies, but the billionaire entrepreneur claims his morning routine is not as lavish as many would expect. Speaking on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the Tesla and SpaceX boss revealed that he starts his day with a very simple breakfast meal.
He said he enjoys a protein-packed combination of steak and eggs. And while it might sound indulgent to some, Musk believes it helps keep his energy levels steady throughout the day.
Discussing his diet, he told Joe Rogan: "I just have like steak and eggs for breakfast, no bread." Asked whether it was effective, Musk replied: "It's great actually. It's a power-up."
He went on to explain that he believes carbohydrates are responsible for energy spikes followed by a crash later in the day. "We're all overrun with carbohydrates," he said. "Carbohydrates make this big crash – the rise and the crash."
While nutrition experts are divided on low-carb diets, both steak and eggs contain nutrients that play important roles in energy production. They are also key to muscle maintenance and overall health.
Eggs are widely regarded as one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. According to the NHS, they are a good source of protein and contain vitamins including B12 and vitamin D, alongside minerals such as selenium and iodine.
They are also rich in choline, a nutrient that supports normal brain function. Research published by the US National Institutes of Health has linked choline intake to memory, cognitive performance and healthy nervous system function.
Meanwhile, steak provides high-quality protein as well as iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Iron helps transport oxygen around the body, while vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy release and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
The British Nutrition Foundation notes that lean red meat can form part of a healthy, balanced diet when eaten in moderation. It also provides key nutrients that can sometimes be harder to obtain from other foods.
Protein-rich breakfasts have also been linked to improved satiety. A review published in the journal Nutrients found that higher-protein breakfasts may help people feel fuller for longer and reduce hunger later in the day.
However, experts stress that no single meal is responsible for youthfulness or longevity. Maintaining good health typically depends on a combination of factors.
These include diet, exercise, sleep, stress levels and genetics. Even so, Musk's preferred breakfast does contain several nutrients associated with sustained energy levels, cognitive function and healthy ageing.
