A former student had her wallet stolen when she was 18 years old, which contained her driving licence and student ID, but was baffled when she got a 'suspicious' message 43 years later
A woman who had her wallet stolen when she was a university student 43 years ago was met with the surprise of a lifetime when she received an unexpected message. While studying at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington, in 1983, one woman was left devastated as she realised her wallet had been stolen, containing her student ID as well as her driver's licence.
Taking to Reddit, where she goes under the username 'SocietyDisastrous787', the woman explained that the wallet had presumably been taken out of her backpack while she was in a crowded room. As the years went by, the woman slowly forgot about the theft, and went on with her life. That is, until 43 years later. Now being 62 years old, received a message request on Facebook that changed everything.
While she was left suspicious when she first saw the request, claiming the man's account looked 'suspicious', she went on to accept the message request.
But the suspicious soon turned to amazement when she learned the man was a city groundskeeper, and had found her wallet on the ground while mowing the grass in a field near a sports field all these decades later. The message included a picture showing the wallet that she had not seen for 43 years, which was now in bits and covered in mould, but with her photo ID cards still intact.
The person who found it asked u/SocietyDisastrous787 if she wanted the wallet returned to her, but she did not see any need, as it only contained old and out-of-date cards.
Speaking to Newsweek, she said: "The image is enough to remind me of my school years and some of the people I knew back then. And the memory nudge of the sideways driver’s license picture has been fun."
But the woman went on to share the photo onto Reddit's 'Mildly Interesting' forum, as she wrote: "Someone found my wallet that was stolen 43 years ago. A groundskeeper for the city noticed it while mowing and found me on FB to ask if I wanted it back."
People soon flocked to the comment section, as many users had questions for the woman. One person asked: "How far away was it found from where it was stolen?"
To this, the woman replied: "Maybe a five minute walk. Looks like they took it to the edge of campus and tossed it in a field."
As for her reaction upon seeing the groundkeeper's message, she said: "Profanity fell from my fingertips. And then I laughed. I can't even remember what the wallet looked like or what I did to replace all the cards.
"I never again left my bag unwatched, though," she added.
However, some people also suspected that the grounds keeper had been the person to stole the wallet in the first place. But the woman soon put an end to this theory, as she said: "He looks younger than 43. By ten years or so."
