Young mum, 35, suffers 'life-threatening' injuries after horrific Great White Shark attack Leah Stewart, 35, suffered 'extreme blood loss' after she was repeatedly bitten by a suspected great white shark - with the mother-of-one now fighting for her life A mum who was repeatedly mauled by a shark while swimming at a tourist hotspot has been left fighting for her life after losing her arm in the attack. Leah Stewart, 35, suffered "extreme blood loss" after she was bitten in multiple areas of her body at Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday morning. It is believed Leah was savaged by a 12ft great white shark around 100ft from the shoreline shortly before 11am local time. In a heartbreaking update, her brother, Joshua Stewart, revealed the teacher remains on life support having undergone multiple surgeries. A fundraising appeal, which has raised almost $200,000 AUD, says the Coogee local and mum-of-one "sustained severe and life-threatening injuries with multiple bites across her arms and legs, lacerations and fractures throughout her body, and extreme blood loss". It adds: "Leah remains in a critical condition on life support and has undergone multiple surgeries in the days after the attack. Tragically her treatment has required the amputation of her arm, and more surgeries are scheduled for the coming days." Beachgoers described hearing a piercing scream before rushing over to Leah, who was surrounded by a "massive pool of blood," witness Nicola Logan said. Off-duty doctors applied tourniquets to her limbs in a bid to stem the bleeding before she was airlifted to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney for emergency treatment. Paying tribute to his sister, Joshua Stewart wrote: "Leah is a dedicated and loving mother, a passionate teacher, and a Coogee local who loves the ocean. "As a family we are shocked and devastated that this could happen to our beloved partner, daughter and mother who is so full of life and energy." The fundraising page says Leah now faces "a long road to recovery" with donations helping fund her rehabilitation, prosthetics and ongoing care as she works towards returning to life with her "much loved one year old daughter". Leah was pulled to safety by off-duty lifeguard Charlie Verco, 24, who had entered the water to rescue her. Her family gave thanks to "the lifesavers, first responders, helicopter crew, and the dedicated medical team at St. Vincents", as well as everyone who had reached out with "sympathy, care and prayer". Friends have described Leah as "amazing," noting her campaigning for improved water quality and raising awareness of breast cancer. Last year, she took part in a more than 30 mile-swim to raise funds for breast cancer research. Authorities closed a number of beaches across Sydney's eastern suburbs after Saturday's attack to monitor the area for sharks before reopening on Monday.
