South Wales and the Southwest of England will bear the strongest brunt of a band of low pressure sweeping across the UK from the west, the Met Office has warned
The Met Office has forecast heavy rain to batter parts of the UK on Tuesday as conditions deteriorate following a sunny weekend.
A band of low pressure will move across the UK from the west, bringing with it downpours which will linger for most of the day. The rain will be heaviest across south Wales and the Southwest of England, weather maps show.
The Met Office website reads: "Some showery outbreaks of rain will affect northern and western areas on Tuesday." It states the showers will be more widespread on Tuesday evening, likely to cause disruption across parts of the Midlands and the Northwest of England.
But the unsettled spell will be short-lived as temperatures are set to slowly rise this week, reaching peaks of 28C or 27C by Friday. The Met Office says the East of England will see the warmest of this weather.
Rain will be heavy on Tuesday, though, with low cloud and coastal fog expected across the Southwest of England. Cloud cover will build through Monday evening and in Tuesday, forecasters understand.
Patchy rain will hit the Cornwall, north Devon and Welsh coastlines early on Tuesday, and the clouds will gather later in the morning. Soon, rain will become heavier as it moves northeast throughout the day.
Weather charts seen by the Express show rain will be widespread - and heavy - throughout the afternoon and into the evening. By roughly 8.30pm, central England will be soaked, extending from Greater London up to Cumbria. Showers will linger over Scotland, the maps indicate.
The rainfall will ease into showers overnight, with pockets affecting the southwest coast of England into Wednesday morning. That said, the rain won't affect everyone. The Met Office predicts "sunny spells for many" on Monday and it will still feel pleasant in the sunshine, albeit slightly cooler along the east coast.
The southeast is poised to avoid most of the wet conditions. During Monday evening, it will be predominantly dry in the southeast with clear spells and gentle winds.
Forecasters predicted "dry and brighter" weather elsewhere on Tuesday, with the southeast of England expected to enjoy the best of the warm sunshine and escape the gloomy outlook.
