A refuse collector and self-proclaimed social media 'binfluencer' has advice for all UK 'Karens' who get angry when their trash isn't collected - even though it's their mistake
When it comes to refuse collection, there's an abundance of mistakes we can make as UK residents that result in our bins not being emptied. From putting them out too late, to disposing the wrong kind of waste inside them, binmen have the final say as to whether they are emptied in the lorry.
Ashley, who is known as the No1 Binman on social media and describes himself as a 'binfluencer', regularly shares his rubbish wisdom with more than 50,000 followers. In his latest clip, he highlighted an error that many people on his round make - and subsequently blame it on staff.
"When Karen screams at you for missing her bin... but she put out the wrong bin," he penned in a caption.
It prompted one TikTok user to issue their own advice on how to avoid slipping up.
"How can you get it wrong?" they asked. "Every street has one of those neighbours who’s memorised the bin calendar, you always follow their lead!"
A second person agreed: "I never remember what bin it is so I wait for my neighbours to put theirs out so I know."
While a third told all the 'Karens' out there: "Be nice to the binmen and they are nice to you, not hard."
Ashley has also revealed his "brilliant" comeback to people who tell him to get a move on while doing his rounds.
Being a refuse collector is no walk in the park as it's a physically taxing job that demands early morning starts throughout the year - regardless of the weather conditions.
It might be freezing and tipping it down with rain, or it could be baking hot - yet refuse collectors still need to complete their job as key workers.
In a recent clip shared on TikTok, Ashley playfully revealed his typical response to people who want him to "hurry up".
And in the footage, he can be spotted sitting in the front seat of a van while dancing and lipsyncing to Belinda Carlisle's hit 1989 track, (We Want) The Same Thing.
Specifically, the lyrics: "We dream the same dream, we want the same thing; ooh. We dream the same dream, we want the same thing, ooh."
Ashley gave further context through text written over the top of the footage. He added: "When you want the binmen to hurry up. We always want to hurry up so we can go home!"
A standard guide to recycling bins:
In the UK, most councils follow a standard colour-coded system. However, check your local council's specific waste guidelines to learn which bin to use as it might vary by area.
Here is a standard bin guide:
Mixed recycling (usually blue or green bins): Accepts cardboard, newspapers, magazines, empty plastic bottles, food/drink cans, and glass bottles or jars. It won't accept crisp packets, soft plastic films, and polystyrene.
Food waste (usually brown bins or kitchen caddy): Accepts fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, bones, teabags, and eggshells.
Garden waste (Usually Brown or Green Bins): Accepts grass cuttings, weeds, flowers, and small branches.
