B&M shoppers are only just realising what store's name means after 48 years B&M shoppers have been left floored after realising what the store's name actually means. It's taken some people 48 years to get there and understand its significance There are many shops that people love visiting, but a popular choice for many is B&M, as the store is known for offering all sorts of items to improve homes on a budget. However, while you may be clued up on its products, the history of the shop may leave you taken aback. A shopping story has been told which reveals what B&M's name actually means, and it's probably different to what you think. The tale was previously told on TikTok, and some shoppers have been left gobsmacked, as they have never stopped to think what the title actually represents. It comes after B&M shoppers also shared another secret. Months ago, they were running to buy a particularly good foodie treat at the store. The interesting fact was drawn attention to by Jo Jo Belle, who shared a screenshot of the shop's history. Alongside the image, she wrote: "This is what B&M really stands for. Who knew?" What does it mean? B&M Retail Limited, trading as B&M, is a British multinational variety store and garden centre chain. It was actually founded back in 1978. Little you may know, the business was founded by Malcolm Billington and Brian Mayman and the first store is reported to have opened in Blackpool. At first, it held the name Billington & Mayman, which was inspired by the founders' names. However, it was soon shortened to "B&M". It was later acquired by Simon and Bobby Arora in December 2004 from Phildrew Investments. At the time, the company traded from just 21 stores. By 2010, the business moved into a new head office and 620,000 square foot distribution centre in Speke, Liverpool. Just two years later it opened its 300th store. In 2013, Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, one of the world’s leading private equity firms, acquired a decent stake in B&M. Since then the business has changed and evolved in many ways over the years. There are now hundreds of shops across the UK and Northern Ireland. It's a business that has continued to evolve. It's worth knowing the story behind it, as some people have come to think the name stands for "Bargain Madness". Over the years, shoppers have used it as a popular nickname due to the idea that so many bargains can be found at the store; however, it was actually inspired by the names of the founders. When the news was shared on Facebook, one person said: "I always thought it stood for Bargains & More." Another noted: "You learn something new every day." Where can I find B&M? The website states: "B&M was formed in 1978 and is now one of the leading variety retailers in the UK. From its first store in Blackpool, Lancashire, B&M has grown to over 700+ stores and employs over 35,000+ staff. "B&M believes in selling top branded products at sensational prices. We attract over 4 million happy customers through our doors a week. "B&M has stores throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."
