EXCLUSIVE: England World Cup fans can pay to sleep in TV star JR Ewing's bed at the World Cup this week, at the Dallas Southfork ranch and museum near the stadium
It's the most special World Cup hotel room in all of Dallas - and English couples have been queuing up to stay in it ahead of the tournament.
JR Ewing’s bedroom is at Southfork Ranch where Dallas - one of the most successful TV series in history - was filmed. Guests have to splash out 1,978 dollars (£1,475) a night - the figure chosen to commemorate the actual year the programme was first screened - to stay in the room close to the stadium hosting England’s first World Cup match.
Three Lions supporters have already been visiting the museum in their droves. There are handwritten messages on a “where are you from wall” from Newcastle, Birmingham, London, Manchester and even one from the small market town of March in Cambridgeshire.
Operations manager LuCretia Buckett said: “Recently we had a couple fly in from London. They landed at Dallas Fort Worth airport and arranged to get an Uber here to the ranch.
“They stayed the night in JR’s bed and they they got an Uber back to the airport in the morning and flew back to England - that’s dedication to Dallas for you."
This ranch was the set for the all the series from 1979-1989 - just not for the very first year. Larry Hagman - the actor who played JR Ewing - loved the ranch so much he often popped in unannounced.
“He would arrive with his wife in their motorhome and just come in and buy souvenirs,” said LuCretia.
“He was a such a lovely man - he always had time for the fans and was very kind. The interest we get from England is huge and we are expecting much more this week with all the fans in the area.
“Dallas was such a success in England and across other areas of the world. Often people from other countries say they learned to speak English from watching the show with their parents of grandparents.”
LuCretia actually grew up nearby. Her grandparents lived across the street and she can remember the ranch before it became the set for Dallas.
But it became so popular as fans realised it was the set. LuCretia said: “Thousands of fans would turn up.
“When JR was shot people turned up with flowers and letters. They got into my grandparents’ garden. I remember my grandmother getting angry and telling them ‘It’s a TV series - it’s NOT real.”
She gave a fascinating insight into filming at the ranch and how it was originally chosen. Directors were flying across the Dallas area in a helicopter looking for the perfect location. As soon as they saw the branch they landed and made a substantial offer but the owner wasn’t so keen but eventually relented.
“But he would only allow filming in June, July and August the hottest months of the year,” said LuCretia. "So for some scenes in the summer heat of Dallas the actors were dressed in fur coats and there was fake rain and fake snow.
“Sometimes filming started as soon as the sun started to rise - sometimes at 4am. But it was so hot there was one scene where Sue Ellen and Miss Ellie had to move - but they couldn’t as their heels had become stuck in the melted asphalt.
“They were certainly interesting times. Lots of football fans have been coming to visit with the World Cup taking place. I know if JR Ewing was around - he’d have been involved.
“There’s no way having such a huge event, and a chance to make money on his doorstep, that he wouldn’t have seen opportunities.” When JR was shot in November 1980 over 21.5 million Brits watched the episode - over half the population at the time. Many families always sat down together to watch the weekly episodes.
Just down the road from the museum England's bid for World Cup glory starts in Dallas on Wednesday when they play Croatia in their opening group game before flying to Boston and New York.
