US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick warned Anthropic PBC Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei in a letter Friday that the company would need government permission before exporting its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models to any destination worldwide, or to any foreign national regardless of location.
Lutnick threatened Anthropic with criminal and civil penalties if it failed to comply, according to a copy of the directive obtained by Bloomberg News. That prompted Anthropic to disable both models for all users, as it continues talks with the Trump administration in the hopes of finding a resolution.
