Full list of vehicles banned from the right lane on a motorway Certain vehicle types are banned from using the right lane on a UK motorway with three or more lanes The right-hand lane of the motorway, often mistakenly referred to as 'the fast lane', is solely intended for overtaking vehicles travelling more slowly in the lanes to your left. The Highway Code states that drivers should keep to the left lane unless overtaking. It further advises that you should return to the left lane once it is safe to do so, and to remain alert to emergency services and other vehicles that have pulled over on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area. If you are travelling in the left lane and it is safe, you should move into the next lane to give more space between your vehicle and any people or stationary vehicles in such situations. Many motorists may not realise that certain types of vehicles are prohibited from using the right-hand lane on a motorway. Those caught flouting this rule face a fine of up to £300 and three penalty points on their licence. This law applies when travelling on a motorway with three or more lanes open to traffic heading in the same direction.
