After months of speculation, the Prince and Princess of Wales have announced that their eldest son will be heading to Eton College in September, following in the footsteps of his father
After months, or even years, of speculation, Prince William and Princess Kate have announced that their eldest son will be heading to Eton College in September to begin his secondary education. On Tuesday, the Prince and Princess of Wales confirmed the news in a statement, saying George will be following in the footsteps of his father.
George, who turns 13 in July, is currently in his final term at Lambrook School alongside his siblings Charlotte and Louis, which he has attended since September 2022. When he returns to class after the summer holidays, he will transition to the £63,000-a-year all-boys school, which is just a 12-minute drive from their Forest Lodge home.
A statement on behalf of William and Kate said: "Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from September." The statement did not confirm if George will be boarding at the prestigious school.
It is believed that Eton wasn’t always a given to be George’s secondary school, with other front-runners allegedly being his mother's former school of Marlborough College, while William and Kate were also said to have recently been spotted touring Oundle School in Northamptonshire.
However, they were reportedly spotted touring Eton with their eldest son as far back as 2023, fuelling speculation the school was always high on their list of places to send George. If you can't see the poll, click here .
George is now part of a long line of Royal Family members who have attended Eton College, including his father and uncle Princes William and Harry, as well as Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, the Duke of Gloucester, and Prince Michael of Kent, as well as Princess Diana's brother and father.
William, who attended Eton 1995 and 2000 where he boarded at Manor House, thrived at the school. When he was interviewed at age 18, the future king spoke of how much he enjoyed his time there. "I've really enjoyed being able to go about Eton as just another student," he said in June 2000.
William would often use his free Sunday afternoons while at the school to travel the short distance to Windsor Castle to have tea with his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. During his time there, he also became prefect and joined several sports teams, while also excelling in academics.
It was a different story for Prince Harry, however, as he has spoken openly about not enjoying his time at Eton when he attended between 1998 and 2003.
Writing in his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry added that he found it challenging to settle in at the boarding school, calling it “a profound shock” and adding that upon his arrival, saying: “I didn’t even know how to get dressed in the morning. I was in way, way over my head.”
During a recent interview with TIME after being named one of the outlet’s 100 most influential people in sports, the Duke of Sussex added: “Sport held me together. I was one of those kids at school who did not enjoy classroom work. If it wasn’t for the sports field, and the amount of sports that were on offer, there’s no way I would have stayed in school.”
During his time at the prestigious secondary school, George will have an array of 28 subjects to get stuck into, which include nine different languages, numerous sciences, English literature, and creative classes such as art, music and theatre studies.
On top of academics, the young prince hosts a range of extra-curricular activities, including 25 sport options, 50 musical ensembles and choirs, and 18 plays stages per year. According to Eton’s website, students are taught to value their education to set them up for a successful university career, as their site states: "It is crucial that boys enjoy their studies, thrive and have fun, rather than leave feeling burnt out and disengaged."
The school, which was founded by Henry VI in 1440, is still steeped in long-standing tradition, which sees pupils dress in a uniform of a tailcoat, a waistcoat and striped trousers. As well as a host of royalty, 20 British prime ministers also attended the elite school, as well as countless celebrities including Eddie Redmayne, Dominic West, Damian Lewis and Tom Hiddleston.
