HR dispute between two Las Vegas city workers turned deadly after argument led to shooting, police say Brysen Kim said he had previously made complaints about his co-worker Joey McLean – but that nothing had been done about them - Bookmark A months-long feud between Las Vegas city maintenance workers ended in a fatal shooting, police say. Joey McLean, 41, was shot to death at work on June 12, allegedly by his 31-year-old coworker, Brysen Kim. Police say McLean's death marks the violent end of a months-long conflict between the men. On the day of the shooting, Kim made a 911 call, telling police that he'd been threatened and that he'd shot his co-worker, 8 News Now reports. Kim told Las Vegas Metropolitan Police detectives that he had made reports with the city complaining that McLean had been harassing and threatening him, but that no one had done anything to help him. “I’m gonna be honest brother, look this has been going on with this guy for-for-since the beginning of the year,” Kim said. “It’s all been documented with the city. I’ve begged them for help with this." When police arrived, they found McLean dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Witnesses reportedly told police that Kim arrived at work to find McLean was already at the site. He reportedly said 'You want to start with this [expletive]" an then punched McLean in the face. The witness said they saw McLean fall to the ground and that he appeared to be unconscious. The witnesses then reportedly told police that Kim kicked McLean in the head twice. At that point, the other workers in the immediate vicinity reportedly tried to move Kim away. Kim allegedly drew his pistol and fired two shots at McLean, who witnesses said still appeared to be unconscious. According to the witnesses, Kim then set the gun down and went to call 911. One witness told police that immediately after the shooting, Kim told his coworkers that "I love you guys, but f*** him." Police noted in an arrest report that problems between McLean and Kim had been "brewing for approximately six months, all of which involved HR." McLean was described to police as a "complicated worker" by Melvin Segovia. his former supervisor. Segovia — who was also Kim's supervisor — said that McLean had recently been away from the worksite for a 15-day administrative leave. He reportedly had refused to work, citing concerns that the city's vehicles weren't safe to drive. Segovia told police McLean was a regular visitor to the HR department. “He estimated they have been to HR approximately five (5) to six (6) times for the incidents,” police said in the arrest report, per the Las Vegas Review Journal. “Melvin stated as their supervisor, he would take the complaints and email his supervisors, along with HR, outlining some of the issues.” One of those incidents involved Kim's work truck. McLean was accused of unlocking the tailgate on Kim's truck. The tailgate later swung open and struck Kim. In another example, Kim complained to HR that McLean was sending him after-hours text messages accusing him of shooting up steroids, of being in a "blood gang," and of having "gang-related" tattoos across his upper body. Hector Marin, another co-worker, told the Las Vegas Review Journal that Kim was "a good person and always friendly, but McLean was a nuisance and often caused problems in the workplace, causing friction within the team and company." According to police, the problems between McLean and his team weren't lost on the supervisors. They reportedly told police they had planned to separate the men by moving McLean to another job site, but the homicide brought an end to that plan. “I’ve come for them for help with this,” Kim reportedly told police. “This guy’s followed me home. … I’ve came to them for help. They didn’t provide safe work environment for nobody. They didn’t hear me out. I went through their whole process and they just kept telling me, to hold on brother.” Kim withheld further comment to the police until he could speak with a lawyer present. Police charged Kim with murder with use of a deadly weapon.
