Naseem Aktar, 51, has been left outraged after her cat was found dead just metres from her home in Bury, Greater Manchester, with police deciding they wouldn't take her case any further
Heartbreaking footage has captured the moment a cat was brazenly stolen from outside their home by a couple - three days before she was found dead.
The video, taken by a Ring doorbell camera at the home of Naseem Aktar, 51, shows a man and woman luring her elderly Tabby cat Lola from her neighbour's front drive near Market Street in Bury, Greater Manchester. Sales executive Naseem said she searched for the beloved 16-year-old moggy for three days after she was stolen on the May 25 bank holiday - which became the second hottest day on record for May.
Lola was tragically found dead three days later, with her lifeless body discovered under a car just a couple of hundred metres from her home after the shock footage showed the couple carrying Lola and walking away from Naseem's address.
The short, 30-second clip shows Lola walking inside the front of Naseem's neighbour's property, inside a perimeter marked by a low brick wall. As the clip continues, it captures two people walking up to the cat, who has jumped onto the wall, and petting her - with the pair seen carrying her off not long after.
Naseem said she received a call on May 28 saying Lola had been found deceased under a car outside a primary school, and rushed her to the vets, who told her Lola had died from dehydration.
She later contacted the police but has been left fuming after officers told her they would not be charging the couple who stole her cat, as there are no relevant laws with which to convict. Naseem has since slammed the police saying they have shown no sympathy and accused them of "chucking" her case into the "long grass".
Naseem said: "Lola was like a child to us - she was a member of the family. She was a non-vocal cat, so she couldn't make noises, but it breaks my heart as you can see her struggling to get away in the videos.
"We don't know how someone could be capable of doing something like this, and we don't want anyone else to be subjected to the same brutal and cruel actions. It also disgusts me that the police aren't taking action. This couple are responsible for Lola's death, yet they don't seem to care."
While searching for Lola, Naseem and her family knocked on neighbours doors requesting video footage to see if they could gauge her rough location.
Nassem believes she ended up at an address on Surrey Drive, over half a mile from her house. The mum-of-three said: "Lola was mainly an indoor cat. If she did go outside it was only to our back garden or the boundary wall of our neighbours' fence. She was very affectionate.
"You can see her interacting with the people in the video before they take her away." Naseem says the couple released her and she was left to make her own way home.
She said: "Lola would have had no idea where she was - breaks my heart. Market Street is a busy main road, she is scared of cars, so she would have never crossed it." Lola was wearing a pink collar at the time of her disappearance, indicating she was not a stray. Vets believe that Lola died from dehydration while attempting to return home, as there were no visible wounds on her body, due to the intense heat, according to Naseem.
She was buried in their back garden surrounded by roses and flowers on May 28. Naseem said: "She was cruelly taken from the comfort of her home and left to die - it was the hottest day of the bank holiday.
"I couldn't save Lola, but hopefully by putting this story out there, we might be able to save others." She has since slammed the police for not investigating Lola's death. The pet lover has revealed how they had three charges they could hold against the couple - theft, the Criminal Damage Act, and the Animal Welfare Act.
But as the couple released Lola she claims the police have said they "won't be taking it any further" saying no offences have been committed.
Naseem branded the decision "disgusting". A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said the service is aware of the alleged cat theft. They said: "All lines of enquiry were exhausted and the crime has been closed due to insufficient evidence. The person that reported this will have also been given this update via officers who attended." The Mirror has contacted Greater Manchester Police about Naseem's criticism.
