Ukraine has launched a devastating wave of over 1,000 explosive drones across Russia in Kyiv’s biggest assault on its neighbour since the war began. At least 200 Kamikaze drones targeted the capital Moscow, focusing on the capital's major oil refinery for the second time in recent days and setting off major fires. Huge plumes of black smoke were sent into the sky during the three hours assault on Moscow which launched at 4am and ended at 7am local time.
Ukraine also launched four cruise missiles into Russia as President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was taking the war to the Kremlin and warned “If Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn too.” He added: “Last night, our long-range sanctions once again reached the Moscow region — for the second time this week, the Moscow oil refinery was hit. Targets were also struck in the Rostov region and in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
“This is a fully justified response to Russian attacks on our cities and communities, and another important result of our warriors’ work against facilities that sustain Russia’s war machine. It is time the war ended, and Russia must take the necessary steps in diplomacy. We don't want this war and have never wanted it - but if Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn too."
Fires broke out as the Kapotnya refinery in south-east Moscow was hit for the third time in a month and the second time this week. It is thought several large oil storage tanks were blown up. A nearby shopping centre was also set ablaze, reportedly after drone debris fell on the building, and several residential high-rise blocks were evacuated.
Moscow's four airports were temporarily shut and more than 500 flights were cancelled or delayed. Ukraine’s deep-strike drone missions inside Russia have devastated the Kremlin’s ability to fund its invasion of Ukraine. Kyiv has also expanded its arms industry, making thousands of drones a-month and allowing Ukraine to launch over 5,000 medium and long-range attacks per month.
It has crippled Vladimir Putin ’s war budget and led to shortages throughout Russia and fuel supplies to frontline troops. Sources told the Mirror Ukraine is trying to exert leverage on Russia now to persuade NATO - chiefly the US - that it can win the war. This means in any peace talks with the Kremlin it will be in a better position to reclaim territory already taken by Russian troops.
In this week’s G7 summit in France members vowed to further sanction Russia, with a focus on its oil and gas sector. The signing of the Iran memorandum of understanding means world leaders will turn their attention in the coming weeks to Ukraine. It is also believed US President Donald Trump, aware Ukraine is turning the war in its favour may now pivot away from Russia if he has been persuaded Putin is increasingly out of favour.
