A four-year-old British girl has reportedly drowned at a hotel swimming pool in Lanzarote.
The incident occurred around 1.30pm on Saturday, June 20, at a hotel in the Playa Blanca resort.
Ambulances, police and an emergency services helicopter were sent to the scene but attempts to save the girl's life were in vain.
An investigation has now been launched into the girl's death and is being led by the Civil Guard.
Sources explained that there is nothing to suggest any suspicious circumstances were involved in the incident.
A spokesman at a regional government emergency response coordination centre said on Saturday evening: "At 1.30pm this afternoon, the Canary Islands Government’s Emergency and Security Coordination Centre received an alert reporting that a young girl showing signs of drowning had been pulled from a hotel swimming pool and required medical assistance.
"The 112 [emergency] service immediately mobilised the necessary emergency resources."
The spokesman added that a nurse, who was on the phone to the lifeguard at the hotel pool, explained the girl had gone into cardiac arrest and instructed the life guard to begin resuscitation attempts.
These, along with those of medical staff sent to the scene, were unsuccessful, however, and so the girl was pronounced dead.
Multiple Spanish media outlets reported the girl involved in the incident was British.
A three-year-old British boy died on Wednesday, June 17, when he fell into a swimming pool at a holiday home where he was staying with his parents near Costa del Sol is the south of Spain.
The incident happened around 8.30am in the village of Periana and despite a large emergency services response being sent to the scene, the boy was pronounced dead.
The boy's family had checked into their rented holiday accommodation just a day before.
Periana Council said in a statement: "There are no words that can ease such immense grief, but we do wish to convey to you all our love, support and solidarity at this very difficult time.
"The whole of Periana shares your sadness and stands with you in your grief at such a painful and unjust loss."
