There's nothing worse than trying to relax and all you hear are screaming kids and loud chatter
If you're looking to dodge shrieking youngsters, cramped airport seats and the relentless noises in the terminal, one handy area could be your saving grace.
Millions of travellers could be missing out on a little-known airport lounge perk that unlocks access for £24. Better still, the discount isn't limited to UK airports and can be used at lounges across the world, turning a hectic airport experience into a far more comfortable one.
An airport lounge can be great value for money. For a set price, you can tuck into unlimited food and drink. We're talking freshly made coffee, Diet Coke, iced tea, beer, wine, sarnies, salads, pastries, nibbles and more.
Can I get a discount at airport lounges?
You can nab a discount with Monzo Premium & Max. Monzo explains: "We’ve teamed up with LoungeKey to give anyone with Monzo Premium or Monzo Max discounted access to airport lounges worldwide.
"You and guests can access 1,100 airport lounges around the world for a flat fee of £24 per person, per visit. This rate includes Max Family, and you will need to pay per person, per visit."
Monzo Perks costs £7 a month, while Monzo Max costs £17 a month. Alongside discounted airport lounge access, customers can enjoy a range of extras, including a free Greggs treat every week, a complimentary cinema ticket each month, 10% off cinema food and drinks, an Uber One membership, an annual Railcard and more.
Do this before getting to the airport
Monzo states that prior to your initial lounge access, you must complete Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) with your payment card. This is a one-off requirement, with subsequent visits automatically charged to your registered card.
If you need to replace your card, you'll be required to register the replacement, complete SCA once more, and show the new card at the lounge during your first visit. Your physical Monzo card is essential for that initial entry.
Monzo explains: "You can pre-register by creating a LoungeKey account using loungekey.com/monzo. Once registered, you can perform SCA and enter a lounge by scanning a QR code.
"If you haven’t pre-registered your payment method with LoungeKey in their app, you will need to complete several steps on the 'lounge device' before entering the lounge."
Do I have to pre-book access to the airport lounge or can I just turn up?
Some airport lounges let you book in advance, but this usually costs at least £6 extra per person on top of the discounted entry price. This extra fee is set by the lounge, not Monzo. If you simply turn up on the day, you'll pay the standard discounted rate of £24 per person, subject to space in the lounge.
Is Monzo worth it?
Yes, writes Sophie Buchan. After a delay turned an 11pm arrival into a 4am landing, my boyfriend and I headed to Tenerife’s Montaña Roja VIP Lounge while waiting for our flight back to Glasgow.
Entry would normally have cost €44 per person, but a Monzo membership discount brought the price down. You can read my review of it here. Disclaimer: my partner and I paid for it ourselves.
