Queen Sonja of Norway has revealed how her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is recovering following her lung transplant surgery
Norway’s Queen Sonja has spoken out following Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s lung transplant surgery.
Mette-Marit, the King and Queen’s daughter-in-law, underwent the operation last week after her husband confirmed that her health was worsening. The Crown Princess has been battling pulmonary fibrosis since 2018, and while on engagements earlier this year, was seen wearing an oxygen mask to assist with breathing.
Last week, the Norwegian Royal Family confirmed in a statement that the 52-year-old royal was recovering well from surgery. Now, her mother-in-law, Queen Sonja, has broken her silence on the princess’s condition.
While on an engagement in Kristiansand, Norway's sixth-largest city, Sonja spoke to local media after being asked about the princess’s recovery. She said: "It's simply fantastic. It's fantastic that it went so well."
The Queen’s comment comes after Head of Thoracic Surgery at Oslo University Hospital, Arna Tiane, said of Mette-Marit’s condition: "So far, the lung transplant has been a success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team members who were involved in the planning and implementation.
"We are extremely pleased that everything has gone smoothly so far. Like the other newly transplanted patients, the Crown Princess will remain hospitalised at Rikshospitalet for the next few weeks.
"This is a routine procedure to adjust her medication, treat any complications, and carry out her rehabilitation," added Are Holm, head of the Pulmonology Department at the hospital.
An additional statement from Norway's Royal Family read: "Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit has undergone a successful lung transplant at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet in Oslo.
"The Crown Prince and the Crown Princess express their sincere gratitude for the many warm and kind messages they have received. This means a great deal to them at this challenging time."
The comment from the Norwegian queen comes after Mette-Marit’s son, 29-year-old Marius Borg Høiby, was jailed for four years after being found guilty of two counts of rape.
Last week, judges convicted Høiby of raping two women, including one on the Crown Prince's estate at Skaugum in 2018 and another involving a woman in Oslo in 2024.
He was also convicted of abusing an ex-girlfriend. He was cleared of two further rapes, involving a woman he met at an Oslo hotel and another he met in the Lofoten islands in 2023.
Prior to his conviction, Marius had been “consistently visiting his mother”, as Hello! Magazine claimed he was allegedly “smuggled” into Oslo University Hospital through a back entrance to avoid photographers.
