The Victorian Liberal Party is in chaos after an MP claimed they were assaulted by a member of their own party room.
The accused MP is actively considering legal advice to sue their colleague for defamation over the claim, which they deny.
The ABC has chosen not to name the MPs. Both have declined to comment.
The ABC understands an MP brought a complaint to Opposition Leader Jess Wilson's office to allege they were assaulted by another Liberal MP at a community event last month.
The MP then reported their allegation to Victoria Police on June 16, the force confirmed.
"The investigation into the incident remains ongoing and police believe the people involved are known to each other," a police spokesperson said.
The accused MP insists they have not been approached by police. The MP strenuously denies the allegation and is actively considering defamation action against their colleague.
CCTV of the MPs interacting at the event, seen by the ABC, was circulating on Wednesday night. No assault is visible in the vision.
MPs were furious that the party has again reverted to infighting and internal disputes, particularly given the Coalition has a shot of winning government in just five months.
Ms Wilson's office has been contacted.
