It is no secret who many are expecting to take over the reins at Number 10 next month is none other than newly-elected Andy Burnham. The former Greater Manchester Mayor was duly elected the new MP for Makerfield last week with a convincing majority before he was sworn in yesterday after Sir Keir's resignation speech. Smarkets currently have the former Leigh MP at 97.1% to replace Starmer and begin a Premiership of his own with the nearest competitor priced up at just 1.3% in Alistair Carns. The former Marine and now Birmingham Selly Oak MP has been an MP for only two years and it is thought the 46-year-old maybe the only competitor to Burnham to ignite a leadership contest. Labour's Leadership Race The Labour Leadership contest will be next on the agenda for the future of the party and the current government too. They have to be an MP - that one is a given - and must reach one of a number of criteria to make themselves a viable candidate for the leadership. Typically, this is 20% of Labour MPs supporting the nomination and either be nominated by at least 5% of constituency parties or at least three affiliates representing a minimum of 5% of the affiliated membership (two of these have to be trade unions). So who is in the lead? Andy Burnham of course with a 98% rating at the time of writing with the Evertonian set to be the only nominee unless a drastic change in direction amongst the party sees a worthy challenger come forward. Smarkets has Angela Rayner priced at 1.3% to make a dramatic return to the frontbenches but was as high as 14.7% in the last month for the former deputy prime minister. The Cabinet Domino Effect New premiership means new cabinet but one job has been particularly discussed and scrutinised at length - the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Rachel Reeves time at Number 11 has been far from an easy one after inheriting an economy with very tricky and delicate conditions, she was tasked to recover and in some cases has done that, but not without losing support. A number of U-turns, upsetting farmers and changes to ISAs have put her in a very unpopular decision and could well be expected to leave but who will be replacing her? Well Smarkets is pretty consistent with reports that Burnham is thinking about one of three candidates: Wes Streeting, Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood. Right now, it is the former health secretary leading the way at 52.9% to takeover from Reeves while former Labour Leader Miliband is 25% and Mahmood is 19.6% to take over. Interestingly, other suitors such as Yvette Cooper - believed to be the preferred choice amongst key figures in the private sector - is 13% despite reports Burnham does not have her in the his plans to take control of the government's budget.
