The UK is set for its hottest ever June temperature today, and may even see the hottest temperature of all time this week, but heavy rain is also on the cards in some regions.
Met Office forecasters expect the mercury to reach 37C today, possibly rising to 39C tomorrow. Red and amber weather warnings in place across England and Wales warn that 40C could even be possible.
On Friday, the Met Office’s latest predictions suggest highs of 34C are possible in northern areas and 38C in southern regions. But the national weather agency’s latest forecast maps also show heavy rain coming in the morning.
At around 2.45am, the maps show serious downpours in northern and central Scotland as well as along the England-Wales border. Rain is also expected in north-eastern regions at around 7am. The heaviest rain will come in central Scotland, the data suggests.

BBC’s weather forecast for this weekend states: “Remaining very hot and humid on Friday and Saturday, though temperatures will tend to take a dip by Sunday which will feel cooler in comparison.
“There will be plenty of sunshine throughout the period with an added risk of a few scattered thunderstorms on Friday morning and again on Saturday afternoon and evening. A smaller risk of a few scattered thundery showers on Sunday too.”
