A mum who fled her burning home believing her son and grandfather had escaped is searching for answers about how the fire began.
Firefighters found 72-year-old John Morris dead on his bed, with eight-year-old Aurelian Kamp, known to his family as Baby, underneath. The school boy was rushed to hospital but died about an hour later.
Aurelian’s mum, Tahia 'Ty' Kamp, escaped with her two older sons after being woken by her motherat about midnight on November 3, 2025 in Connecticut, US.
North Haven Fire Department initially put down the blaze at the home as an “accidental smoking-related” incident. But an incident report later listed the cause as “undetermined after investigation”. The grieving mother is now seeking clarity over the circumstances of the fire.
Ty, an assistant director at Yale University, said she was woken by her mother’s screams shortly after after midnight. “She was saying there is a fire, and she couldn’t get to John,” she said. “I saw the fire, and it was enormous. I kicked the door of my eldest two children and told them to get out.
“And I ran to get John and the baby out. Baby usually slept with me in my room, but that night he wanted to sleep with grandpa.
“I ran to the door, and was screaming for John,” Ty continued. “I saw the flames were consuming the stairwell only a few feet away. I kept screaming for them, but their bedroom door was shut. In my panic, I thought maybe John had gone out of the window with the Baby, and they were outside.
“I ran back through the house, but when I got outside, I couldn’t see them. The level of terror that set in is indescribable. I just started praying.”
“Even when the firemen arrived,” Ty said, “I still believed they were going to come out alive.”
The firefighters arrived at the home at about 12.30am, and Aurelian was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30am.
Ty said: “Baby was brilliant, generous, kind – everywhere we went, people adored him. John was the only true father I ever had, and we all adored him for the wonderful man he was.
“It is some small comfort in this darkness that he and Baby died together, as they loved one another dearly.” Ty is now questioning why North Haven Fire Department’s initial account of how the blaze started appeared to change.
The day after the fire, the department released a statement saying that the fire was started by a cigarette. However, the incident report later listed the cause of the fire as “undetermined”.
She said: “The pronouncement from the Fire Chief on November 4th was a rush to judgement, as proven by the fact that his own department’s official report a week later stated that the cause of the fire was ‘undetermined after investigation.’
“The lives of Baby and John, which so enriched anyone who ever knew them, deserve more than a rush to judgement.”
The North Haven Fire Department has not responded to requests for comment.
