Ricky Hatton's son Campbell reveals dad's death 'saved' him from taking his own life Boxing legend Ricky Hatton died in September 2025, a period in which his son, Campbell, was battling several addictions after ending his own career in the sport Brave Campbell Hatton has admitted that he was 'weeks away' from taking his own life before the death of his father, Ricky. The former boxing world champion died in September 2025 at the age of 46. In a raw interview, Campbell opened up on how the devastating loss of his dad meant that he had to 'sort himself out'. The 25-year-old had been battling severe addictions to alcohol and cocaine which saw his life spiral out of control. Campbell ended his boxing career last year, having suffered back-to-back defeats and falling out of love with the sport. But he found it difficult to walk away and lost four of his close friends in a crushing six-month period before Ricky's death. "I've spent time in rehab and I was just off the rails," he told ITV. "There was a six months where I lost four people who were really close to me. Even before, I'd struggled to come to terms with retiring from boxing." Campbell continued: "Drinking was always part of that and I was getting treatment for addiction with cocaine as well. I think it all goes hand-in-hand. "I don't think anyone in rehab or struggled with addiction - it is a package thing. I have the personality where it's all or nothing. Whether it's good or bad. It's just the way I'm wired up." Dad-of-one Campbell went to say that he tried to take his own life a 'couple of times'. "There was no thought to the future and it's a bit of miracle that I am still here," he confessed. The Mancunian fighter also revealed how members of his family were so concerned about him that when police arrived to deliver the news about Ricky, they feared that the officers were there because of him. Campbell explained: "When the police were breaking the news [of Ricky's death], a lot of my family thought it going to be about me - and it probably were not far wrong. It was probably weeks off." Having seen a 'massive difference' following his time in rehab, Campbell plans to return to boxing and continue Ricky's legacy. But the change came about in tragic circumstances, admitting that his dad's death 'did sort of save me because I had to sort myself out'. "My family wouldn't have had it in them to go through it again," he added. Campbell, whose professional record stands at 14-2, announced his comeback to the ring this month after signing a multi-fight deal with Misfits Boxing. "I'm getting excited by things again and looking back with pride because of how far I've come," he said. "Its all about doing him [Ricky] proud."
