Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson has claimed there is one Democrat that President Trump is “very convinced” succeed him in 2028.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is the one opposition figure the president privately believes can win the White House, according to his supporter-turned-critic.
“I know Trump is very convinced that Gavin has a shot,” told Alex Jones Live Tuesday.
Carlson was not complimentary about the outgoing governor, however, identifying Newsom’s greatest “advantage”as his lack of scruples.
“He’s a sociopath who will say anything while passing a lie detector test,” the former Fox News host suggested.
“And he can talk, unlike Kamala [Harris]!” Jones chimed in.
Newsom – who has spent much of the last year ridiculing Trump on social media – has not yet declared an intention to run for the presidency, although it is widely expected.
If he were to run and win the Democratic primary, Newsom would potentially face either Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the Republican ticket, with Trump unable to run again despite his teasing to the contrary.
Carlson went on to explain why he felt the prospect of a Newsom versus Rubio race would be so underwhelming.
“The core problem that this country faces is not that it has elites, every country does – it needs them, by the way, somebody needs to run things – it’s that the system we have in place to produce elites instead produces mediocre conformists, wholly lacking in creativity, terrified, weird, easy to control… stagnant,” he said.
“It is not producing impressive people. Every empire is the same in this one regard. When a system fails to produce a leadership class capable of running this huge thing that the ancestors built then it collapses and so we need to fix that, like immediately.”
Jones also asked Carlson whether he harbored any presidential ambitions of his own, to which he answered: “I don’t want to run for president. I do want to be involved in offering an option of some kind.”
Carlson played a prominent role in the latter stages of the 2024 race, endorsing Trump and speaking up for him at a number of rallies. He would ater fall out bitterly over the Iran conflict and says he now regrets his past advocacy for the 47th president.
Trump in turn has lashed out at Carlson, calling him a “low IQ person” and arguing that he has “lost his way” and is “not MAGA.”
Earlier this week, the broadcaster announced he was officially breaking with the Republican Party over its “treasonous” record of prioritizing the interests of corporate donors and Israel over those of the American people.
“I would not support the Republican Party,” he said. “There’s no chance I would support the Republican Party. I’m not going to support the Democratic Party – I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
Carlson resumed his familiar attacks on Israel in his interview with Jones, arguing that the country had a “radical” government and saying that he was “very concerned” it might use its nuclear weapons in the near future.
