A 15-year-old boy is missing after swimming at a popular nature reserve in Hampshire where temperatures exceeded 36C today, marking the hottest June on record
A major search and rescue effort is underway after a 15-year-old boy vanished while swimming at a nature reserve in Hampshire.
Emergency services have been scouring the scene at Testwood Lakes, near Totton, since around 1:45pm. A multi-agency search effort involving the National Police Air Service, South Central Ambulance Service, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service is ongoing.
The incident happened as the record for the hottest June was broken after 36.1C was recorded in Gosport, Hampshire, today. Hampshire Police have advised people to avoid the area.
A police spokesman said: "A multi-agency operation is under way following a report that a 15-year-old boy is missing after he was last seen swimming at Testwood Lakes near Totton.
"This was reported to police at 1.35pm on Wednesday 24 June and the area is currently off limits while our search operation is ongoing. Please avoid the area at this time. Please avoid the area at this time.
"We have deployed the marine units to aid in the search, alongside colleagues from NPAS, South Central Ambulance Service, and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire Service. We will provide further updates when we are able."
Testwood Lakes said it was "extremely concerned" to hear of the "serious incident".
It said: "Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police has confirmed that a multi-agency operation is under way following a report that a 15-year-old boy is missing after he was last seen swimming at Testwood Lakes.
"We have taken the decision to close the nature reserve until further notice and join the police in asking members of the public to please avoid the area at this time."
