An Amazon seller has been slammed for selling a £14 cooling item with a £199 delivery fee - Amazon confirmed they had not raised delivery fees and were taking swift action over the matter
An Amazon customer has expressed their fury as a house cooling item, that costs just £14, had a delivery price of £199 during the red-weather alert heatwave in the UK. The heatwave is set to hit its peak today, with a leading forecaster predicting temperatures will feel more like 50C in some parts of the country on Thursday, June 25.
The UK experienced its warmest June day on record on Wednesday, June 24, as temperatures hit a huge 36.1C in Gosport, Hampshire, breaking a weather record that had been in place for 50 years. A red heat health warning for extreme heat meaning "a risk to life for even the healthy population" is set to continue today, and Friday, and is covering much of the south of England and Wales.
British Weather Services' senior meteorologist Jim Dale told the Mirror: "The heat index, which is a combination of temperature and humidity, temperature and humidity, could well be 10C more than the actual air temperature.
"So when we say 40C, if it ever reaches that, it will feel like 50C, and that's why there's going to be a problem.
"It's Marmite weather; you either love it and enjoy it, or you suffer... and the sufferers are going to feel it big time."
Cooling items listed on Amazon as having £199 delivery price - Amazon investigating
As many people across the UK search for ways to keep their homes cool so they can feel more comfortable during the heatwave, one seller on Amazon was spotted selling a home-cooling item with same day, or next day delivery for an obscene £199.
The item cost just £12 and is a hose for a portable air conditioner. The hoses are a large white tube that is placed out of a window to help ventilate a room and air conditioned.
A spokesperson from Amazon said: "Amazon has not raised delivery fees. This relates to one seller, who we're urgently investigating. No customer should have this kind of experience.
"Our Fair Pricing Policy strictly prohibit sellers from charging excessively high prices on products and shipping and we take swift action against any seller who does not comply with this policy, up to and including account suspension.
“Customer satisfaction is our top priority. The customer was fully refunded when the seller cancelled the order, and we have reached out to apologise for this experience.”
Those who managed to take delivery of an air conditioner before many sold out, are now facing further problems when it comes to cooling down their home.
According to Amazon UK, the delivery cost of an item on Amazon is set either by Amazon itself or by the third-party seller depending on who fulfils the order.
On this occasion the item appears to be sold and shipped by the firm, guangzhou jincongdianzishangwu youxiangongsi, also known as Manolyee, which doesn't have any verified contact information online.
The company was also offering the same delivery price on items such as cooling pet mats, neck cooling fans and kids toys. Feedback on the sellers page shows a number of people paid for same day, or next day delivery, and did not receive their items in time.
Furious Amazon customers report delivery is late despite £199 shipping fees
One person said: "Paid over £200 in delivery charged to receive item on the same day because of red weather alert today and tomorrow. It hasn't arrived. Very disappointed. Won't be using Amazon again."
A second person said: "I ordered it because it was supposed to be next day. I log in today to check on time only to find that the next day is not 24 June, but July 9. Cancelling my order now."
On both occasions Amazon replied to the customers and said: "The fulfilment issues associated with this order were not due to the seller."
Amazon confirmed that both customers were refunded after their orders could not be fulfilled. The delivery price came as lots of items such as fans, air conditioners, blackout blinds, cooling blankets and other items have sold out across a number of platforms.
